Top 3 Moments
“The Underdogs” Align
Christine: This episode saw the formation of an “underdog” majority alliance between Andy, Caroline, Rachel, Sue, and Teeny, leaving Genevieve, Kyle, and Sam on the outs as the “big threats.” Having an “underdog” alliance be the majority alliance is a bit of an oxymoron since they’re currently in control of the game and have all the advantages at their disposal. But the “underdog” designator is more about their perception as players than their power in the game. This alliance held strong this week to vote out Kyle, but I’m skeptical it will last much longer without such an obvious jury threat like him to rally around.
Rachel Wins Another Advantage
Christine: Rachel got sent on one of the more unique journeys we’ve seen so far, which took her to a floating barge in the water where she had to complete a puzzle for an advantage before the time ran out. Unlike previous journey challenges where the time was tracked with an hourglass, this puzzle was gradually dragged into the water by weights. Rachel beat the puzzle, which had big SAW trap vibes, just in time to win a vote blocker. Rachel used this information to further solidify her underdog alliance but didn’t need to use it yet, getting her another tool in her arsenal along with her idol.
Andy Tries to Flip the Vote
Gia: Kyle losing immunity after his impressive winning streak made him a pretty easy target for tribal council. While some players like Caroline, Sue, and Teeny were all for the easy vote, others were not so easily convinced. Andy, in particular, wanted to sway the vote away from Kyle to Genevieve, who most agreed was the biggest strategic threat left in the game. The idea appeared to gain traction from some, but the other aforementioned players dug their heels in about sticking with Kyle. When it came time to vote, Andy was the only person to vote for Genevieve. Kyle voted for Teeny, and everyone else voted for Kyle.
Advantage Watch
Idols
Christine: When we got a flashback to Rachel and Sue’s idols in the “previously on,” I thought we might finally, at last, get to see Sue’s long-forgotten idol pay off in some way, especially since she was left out of the vote last week. This was not the case since we got a straightforward and obvious Kyle vote, but maybe the “previously on” idol shout-out will actually be resolved this week.
Vote Block
Gia: On top of an idol, Rachel is now in possession of a Vote Block. After she won the draw to go on the advantage journey, she was tasked with sorting a color-sorting puzzle before it was pulled into the ocean (yes, you heard that right). The advantage is good until the final 6, giving her two more rounds to potentially use it.
Top 3 Players
Rachel
Gia: Rachel’s win equity has been on the rise for a while now, but this episode solidified her as the player to watch. She has been wisely keeping her idol close to her chest and now is in possession of a vote block as well. This new advantage could have been another secret in her arsenal, but she instead used it to gain Caroline’s and Sue’s trust. Right now, the majority of players left have at least some level of trust in Rachel or, at the very least, are including her in their plans moving forward. At this point, I’d be shocked if she doesn’t make the finale.
Caroline
Gia: If Rachel is in the best position to win, I’d say Caroline is right behind her. She lost two of her Tuku members back-to-back but has been making headway with new allies in the Underdog alliance. Her friendships with the other women on the merged tribe have proven to be her greatest asset, something she plans to move forward with in the next episode. To me, there’s still something missing in her edit to convince me that she is the winner of the season, but it isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility, especially if she outlasts Rachel and Genevieve.
Genevieve
Christine: Genevieve has been such a blast to watch this season. She’s one of the more confident and direct strategists we’ve seen in the New Era. It was fun to watch her steamroll votes like Kishan and Sol, and it’s even more fun to watch her struggle from the bottom and survive these past two votes with her name out there. She’s more or less dead in the water in terms of winning chances ever since she blew up her spot with the Sol vote, but I look forward to her storyline every week, thinking, “How will Genevieve get out of this alive this time?” She’s on borrowed time, but she’s not giving up and going down without a fight.
Fallen Comrades
Kyle
Christine: Kyle’s game was on the decline ever since he was on the wrong side of the TK vote, and those challenge wins really put him in “big threat” territory, even if he wasn’t one strategically. Once he won more than one immunity challenge, it was going to be hard for him to recover from the designator of “threat,” and his compelling personal backstory only made him even more of a threat. Once he broke his winning streak this week, his exit felt like a sad, obvious eventuality. Based on his classy exit and how the jury reacted to him, it’s safe to say that voting him out for being a jury threat was probably the right call on the part of his fellow tribemates.
Gia: Of all of the certified challenge beasts we have seen in the new era, I would have to say Kyle has quickly become one of my favorites. He was a loyal ally even to his detriment, so honest in his mannerisms and an overall delight to have on the show. His exit from the game confirmed it; he’s just an overall nice guy. I was rooting for him to break that immunity record, but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. However, based on Jeff’s description of the type of player they want to see for Survivor 50, I’d say a Kyle return isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility.
