Survivor star goes Hollywood!

Survivor: Panama castaway Shane Powers is often popping up in the most unexpected places, from The Offspring music videos to Tyler the Creator album skits, but his latest cameo might be the most surprising yet.

Powers has a role alongside Hollywood stars Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Tobey Maguire in Damien Chazelle’s (Whiplash) upcoming film Babylon. In the latest teaser (watch below) for the epic period comedy-drama, a bearded Powers can be seen in a suit with a cigarette in his mouth (of course), yelling at someone off-screen, “Who the f*** are all these people?!”

Babylon is the latest movie from Oscar-winning director Chazelle and chronicles the rise and fall of multiple characters during Hollywood’s transition from silent to sound films in the late 1920s. In addition to Pitt, Robbie, and Maguire, the cast also includes Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, and Li Jun Li.

It’s unclear how significant Powers’ role is in the film, but it’s not his first foray into acting. Before he appeared on Survivor, the Los Angeles native had minor roles in the TV series My So-Called Life and 3rd Rock From the Sun, and he featured in 22 episodes of the Sci-Fi Channel series Black Scorpion.

Powers is best known to Survivor fans as a castaway on the show’s 12th season, Panama, in which he finished in fifth place. He was part of the dysfunctionally functional Casaya tribe and is remembered for going through nicotine withdrawals on the island, arguing with tribemate Courtney Marit, and his heartwarming relationship with his son Boston.

In 2015, Powers was one of the 32 contestants eligible to be selected to compete on Survivor: Second Chance but was not chosen in the final public vote. This came as a shock to many Survivor fans and fellow players, most of whom expected Powers to be a shoo-in for the cast.

These days Powers hosts the daily radio talk show The Shane Show, which you can find here in podcast form.

Babylon is scheduled for release on December 23, 2022.
