For those of you that read my Edgic article for the Survivor: Island of the Idols finale, you will know that I was unsure of whether or not to continue doing Edgic for Season 40. Well, after weighing up the pros and cons, I’ve decided that I will be resting Edgic for the time being.
Last season was tough to watch due to the Dan Spilo inappropriate touching incidents and production’s poor handling of the situation. This also made it a difficult season to analyze edit-wise. Edgic is meant to be something fun, and it suddenly stopped being fun. Honestly, Island of the Idols killed a lot of my enthusiasm for Edgic and Survivor US as a whole.
What made my decision even clearer, however, was the return of the Edge of Extinction twist for Season 40. Not only does the EOE add to my lack of enthusiasm for Survivor US, but it turns Edgic into a chore. Edgic is a big time commitment, and writing potentially 20 write-ups every week for the entire season is A LOT of work, especially on top of the rest of the Winners At War coverage, plus Australian Survivor coverage and other work commitments outside of Inside Survivor.
This doesn’t mean Inside Survivor Edgic is gone forever. If the show gets rid of the EOE, I’m sure it will be back at some point. But for now, Edgic itself has been sent to the Edge of Extinction.
But don’t worry, there is still plenty to look forward to here on Inside Survivor for this upcoming season.
Austin Smith will be recapping the weekly episodes, alongside our newest writer Christine Pallon.
Rob Brodeur will be back with all the stats and trivia after each episode.
Ali & Gus will once again be organizing the players into Hot or Not based on their current gameplay.
Stephanie Lauw will continue to make her predictions each week in the Next Time on Survivor column.
And we’re also working on a couple of new features. I recently launched In The Torchlight, a semi-regular feature that takes a deep dive into impressive moves from any currently airing Survivor—so that might pop up from time to time during Winners At War. And, as always, we’ll have the Player of Week polls and Dream Tribe results.
Apologies to those that will miss our Edgic posts, but I do recommend checking out the Unspoiled Edgic forum for weekly discussion.

This sucks because it is the only thing I look forward to reading on this site each week. I understand not wanting to write up 20 edgics per week especially with other commitments, but could you not ignore those on the edge and just write about those in the game? Additionally, because of one or two negative episodes involving Dan, that means you are completely soured on the game of Survivor? Doesn’t make sense to me.
You can’t really ignore those on the EOE because those edits could be important to the overall narrative.
And it wasn’t just Dan, but production’s poor handling of the situation. Add that to the return of the EOE, the increase in twists and advantages and Probst growing increasingly out of touch with the fanbase, and all of those contribute to why I feel sour on Survivor US… not Survivor in general.
I’m sorry but not doing Edgic because of the Dan situation and how production handled the situation is really absurd. No real reason to come to this site now. It was the best thing on this site and the reason why I came. I read other content because I came here for Edgic.
That wasn’t the only reason. It is mostly a lack of enthusiasm and time. Last season really killed a lot of enthusiasm I had for Survivor US. And then having EOE be part of Season 40 added to that.
But, as you may or may not have seen, the premiere of Season 40 picked my enthusiasm back up and I decided to launch The Edit Bay, a new feature article looking at the edit, rather than a full Edgic post.
I’ll be missing it but as everyone has contributed so much for us, Survivor Fans, I can only support whatever decision you make. Thank you so much for everything, Martin & the others!
