Episode 6 – The Edit Bay

What is the edit telling us after Episode 6?

CBS

Hello all, welcome back to the Edit Bay! This weekly feature takes a dive into the edit of the latest Survivor episode, analyzing the key stories, main characters, and top winner contenders.

For those new to The Edit Bay, it is a condensed version of Edgic, highlighting some of the stand-out story beats from the most recent episode. It also includes my weekly Edgic ratings for each castaway at the end of the article.

I’m going to do something a little different this season, and for each episode, I’ll highlight each player’s best/most substantive confessional and how it ties into their overall character/arc/story.

CEDREK

We get back from Tribal, and Sai’s initial response is one of anger. I knew there was gonna be some damage control. It was gonna have to happen quick, because minutes before Tribal, I realized that we were being played. And so I told Chrissy to vote for Bianca, but I did not have a chance to tell Mitch and Sai about Bianca’s mastermind plan, and that she played us. She played us against each other. Sai’s frustrated and confused, but she has no idea that I’m the reason you’re still here. Like, I’m the reason you’re still here right now.

It was good that Cedrek explained what happened at the last tribal council regarding the Bianca vote. He cleared up most of the audience’s questions, particularly why Sai and Mitch were left out of the vote. However, my main takeaway is the continued focus on the Cedrek and Sai dynamic. It’s a dysfunctional relationship built on distrust and seems sure to blow up for one or both of them sooner or later.

Outside of this, Cedrek had another challenge failure and an emotional response. We’ve seen Cedrek portrayed as an emotional player throughout the season, and his scene with Star was perhaps the most emotional yet. In an episode that had a lot of talk about “honesty” and “integrity,” I believe this moment between Cedrek and Star was the real example of those traits.

MITCH

At this point in the game, I want to move forward with the original Civa six. We have the numbers and on top of that, I have a secret Block a Vote. So we are in a great position.

Poor Mitch was thrown for a loop in this episode. He started off trying to wrap his head around what happened at the last tribal council, where he acknowledged, “If you don’t have your crap together in this game, it could easily be you whose torch is snuffed out.” Yet, by the end of this episode, he was once again on the outside of the vote looking in.

He lost his closest ally and mistakenly assumed he was in a great position with the original Civas. This obviously didn’t end up being the case. The question now is how Mitch can recover. He does have ties to Cedrek and Kyle, so there is always a chance this could be a wake-up call and the start of a post-merge narrative.

KYLE

The group coming together right now are people that are strong physical players that want to play this game with honor and integrity. And if we could work together, if we can truly protect one another, it’s music to my ears. But at the same time, this is a game for a million dollars. And I’ve already lied a lot in this game. And one thing everybody doesn’t know is that Kamilla is my number one. The foundation of what Kamilla and I have is built on deception. As much as I would love to just kind of come out and be honest about it, I just can’t at this point. That’s Survivor. Any piece of information can get you messed up in this game. So I got to make sure that people don’t see Kamilla and I as a duo.

I thought this was a great merge episode for Kyle. He obviously received screen time for winning individual immunity, but even before that, we saw him as a central part of the tribe dynamics. He was brought into the “honor and integrity” group and shared his thoughts on that. Kyle was the one member of that group to be realistic about it, noting that “this is a game for a million dollars” and lying is part of it.

He also reaffirmed his duo with Kamilla, a “foundation built on deception.” It’s his aim to keep this duo on the down low for as long as possible. At this point, I would say Kyle and Kamilla are the most important duo of the season, or at least tied with Joe & Eva. And they contrast well; you have Joe & Eva claiming to play the “honor and integrity” game, while Kyle & Kamilla are honest with themselves about the kind of game Survivor is.

CHRISSY

I’m nervous and excited about this next stage of the game. This is totally like being at the fire department. The bell just went off and now I’m going to a fire. When we drop our Buffs, it means I’m gonna see my old friends, which I’m really dying to talk to the original Civa. ‘Cause there are six of us still in the game. and I think they’re gonna like Cedrek. But he’s got to get rid of Sai. I don’t know. He keeps wanting to bring her along, and I’m like, keep hinting, like, “You’re gonna drown with this girl. Let her go.”

Chrissy gets these decent confessionals where she ties things back to her job, but there is a lack of depth in her strategic content. Like Mitch, she appeared to be under the false impression that the OG Civas would stay strong at the first merge vote. Of course, this wasn’t the case.

Outside of that, we don’t really know where Chrissy stands. Her content was more about propping up the Cedrek versus Sai dynamic rather than anything to do with her own story. Perhaps if she gets rid of Sai, something can form between her, Mitch, and Cedrek.

DAVID

Joe and I, we’re no longer the meat shields of Survivor, right? We’re getting all the strong people together and we are winning Survivor 48. From now on, you’re lying, you’re manipulating, you’re a strategist, you’re a puzzle solver, you’re a social player, now you’re the target. We got five of the strongest players in Survivor in this alliance, and that’s exactly what I wanted. Let’s have a season where we put someone on the podium who deserves to be there.

David was the biggest proponent of this “honor and integrity” alliance, but I’m not sure we’re meant to take it seriously. After almost 50 seasons, viewers know what Survivor is by now and lying and deception are accepted parts of the game. And this talk of “deserving” always leaves a sour taste in people’s mouths. I think the way Jeff Probst reacted to David’s assertions at tribal council gave a strong indication of how the audience is meant to feel about David’s goals for this season.

If we were meant to take David seriously, the edit wouldn’t continue to hammer this milk stuff every episode. It’s bordering on ridiculous at this point and further portrays David as a cartoonish figure, rather than a player the viewers are meant to take seriously.

SAI

I cannot wait to hug Mary, because right before the switch, we went from mortal enemies to very close allies. Chasing each other all around the jungle was the most fun I’ve ever had. I’m so happy to see Mary. And I know this is not what everybody was expecting.

MARY

I just have, kind of knots in my stomach just thinking about playing with Sai. I just don’t want to relive those days. And it’s not like I feel right with my original Vula. I want to scrub green off of me. Like, I’m only wearing this ‘cause I can’t be naked on national television. I don’t want any green on me. I just want to start fresh.

I’m tying Sai and Mary together because, as expected, both players made it to the merge to reunite. Their story always seemed destined to continue and prove a pivotal narrative of the season. Interestingly, we’ve sort of had a role reversal. While the season started off with Mary trying to find a way in and being rebuffed by Sai, we’re now seeing how Sai wants to work with Mary but Mary showing hesitation.

Mary wants to start fresh while Sai is holding on to old bonds. So are the two destined to always be at odds? It does seem like a scenario where the island isn’t big enough for both of them. But who will go further? “Sai is like a venomous snake. Charity is like a turtle. I’m not scared of a turtle,” Mary said in this episode, yet she voted out Charity. Will she come to regret this move? Or is Sai’s blindspot for Mary going to be her downfall?

KAMILLA

Walking into the feast was insane. Like, my mouth only knows what water and coconut taste like. This mud is nasty. It’s, like, five extra pounds on our scalp. But no one really cares because the feast itself is so important. Like, we’re all starving. It’s day 13, and this food is gonna fuel us for, like, the rest of this game.

This was a quiet episode for Kamilla, but after a really strong pre-merge, I wouldn’t be too concerned. Even if her two confessionals were purely narrational, we still saw her emphasis on her duo with Kyle. And while she wasn’t included in the “honor and integrity” alliance, they also didn’t name her as a target. So she’s sort of protected by them on two fronts, Edgically (avoiding any negativity that might come from that group) and strategically.

If Kamilla starts to have a bunch of quiet episodes like this, then I’ll start to be concerned. However, given the focus on her edit and her relationship with Kyle, I expect her to reemerge soon.

SHAUHIN

It has to be Charity. She’s playing real loud, over the top. On top of that, I don’t think there is a Civa Six Strong. But I don’t want to give them the opportunity to have that Civa Six Strong moving forward. But right now, we need everybody else to come back from the reward, because everybody’s got a person that they want to vote out, everybody’s got people they want to work with. But tonight is about drawing the battle lines. And so, when they finally come back, then all hell breaks loose.

After being dunked on in the Thomas boot episode, Shauhin has had a pretty strong turnaround. He acknowledged his previous blind spot and has worked on making new connections. He was very much the strategic narrator of the merge episode, who named his target (Charity) and ultimately got his way.

He was also named as part of the “honor and integrity” alliance, but he wasn’t a major cheerleader for it in the same way as, say, David and Joe. This gives him some protection should the alliance fall apart or, more likely, undermine their own “honor and integrity” mindset.

JOE

It’s huge that Eva said she has Star’s idol, ‘cause she said she’d use it with me if she needed. And I feel protected now. And she also feels protected, so that’s great. Our plan is to start building a team– myself, Eva, Shauhin, David and Kyle– all the physical threats, but also honest and loyal players. ‘Cause the game doesn’t have to be this new generation of stabbing people in the back and doing crazy moves just for the pizzazz.

I found Joe’s edit very interesting in this episode. Obviously, he had his huge moment in the previous episode in the emotional scene with Eva. He reflected on that here, noting how a moment like that is even more important than walking away with a million dollars. So, in a way, you could say Joe has finished his story. He’s accomplished a goal outside of winning.

Yet, we still heard a lot about his strategy and plans moving forward. However, I’m not sure how seriously we were meant to take them. He talked up this “honor and integrity” alliance and wanting to play a game that didn’t involve “stabbing people in the back and doing crazy moves.” But surely it’s not accident how the edit continued to highlight Joe (and Eva) saying “Star’s idol,” happily claiming the idol for themselves while leaving Star out of their “honor and integrity” group. Star, who has been portrayed as one of the most honest players on the island.

I just don’t see this “honor and integrity” group as long-lasting, or, at least, not a group we’re supposed to root on. I don’t believe that, in this day and age, the show would want to promote the “loyalty, strength, no crazy moves” style of gameplay. So either Joe and co will become hypocrites, or their attempts at “honor and integrity” will see them outplayed.

EVA

Joe and I have an extremely tight bond. And I know that we, as a duo, are a threat. Certainly, there’s targets on us. And so the plan is to bring together strong, like-minded individuals so we can run the game.

Eva’s edit was very similar to Joe’s. We had scenes of them reconnecting and then talk of this “honour and integrity” group. In addition, Eva shared her thoughts on the episode’s two targets, Charity and Sai, both of whom threw her name out. Eva recognized her threat level and explained how she was hoping to counteract those attacks.

As I mentioned in Joe’s write-up, I’m not sure how seriously we should take this new group. Eva willingly took Star’s idol and, as far as we know, made no attempt to give it back, which, for an alliance of “integrity” seems like the right thing to do, regardless of whether Star gave it away or not. What makes it worse is that Star now considers Eva a friend and immediately went to tell her Charity was plotting. Yet, Eva and co have shown no desire to bring Star into their group.

STAR

Charity’s telling me that I need to go to Eva and ask for my idol back. That kind of threw me a little bit. I think Charity’s just stirring up the pot. She’s creating drama. I think she might be going rogue. But here’s the thing. Me and Eva are friends now. She helped figure out the puzzle lock, so I let her keep the idol because finders keepers.

With all the talk of “honor and integrity,” this episode showed Star as the player truly representing those values. Not only did she let Eva keep her idol, but she continued to support that decision in this episode. When Charity told her to ask for it back, Star remained loyal to Eva, letting her know about this straight away.

At the merge feast, when everyone else was too afraid to say a name out loud, Star wasn’t scared to be open and let the group know where she stood and what she knew. Compare this to everyone else having side conversations and jungle strat chats. Star’s cards are all on the table. As if that wasn’t enough, Star was super sweet with Cedrek when he was down about his challenge blunder. She gave him a pep talk and highlighted the values he brings to the tribe.

Yet, despite all of this, Star was left out of the “honor and integrity” group. Eva and co were happy to take Star’s idol but not let Star herself join their alliance. I think the hypocrisy was subtle but definitely there, and I expect it to become more prevalent moving forward. Unfortunately for Star, I feel like she’s going to be a victim of her own honesty and integrity.

One response to “Episode 6 – The Edit Bay”

  1. I will say that what helps Joe and Eva in the “honor and integrity” alliance is that David seems to take the brunt of the dunking. He is shown talking about it more forcefully and he was the one that got undermining from the edit and Jeff. Joe and Eva just talk about it as virtues and leave it at that. So to me, it builds more undermining for David while still lionizing Joe and Eva.

Joe’s biggest problem is still Eva. The longer she’s in the game, the more Joe has an opportunity to sacrifice himself for her. Now in this particular season that may not be a problem. There does seem to be an air of needing to play the game for more than just winning. His desire to stick to loyalty above all else could be the best way to exemplify Joe’s strategy if he wins. His entire game philosophy was established in Episode 1 and has never really been contradicted or undermined. Eva also has that same upside and also has a strong introduction of “excelling in male-dominated fields.” She’s now in a male-dominated alliance, and could come out on top.

I also think Shauhin is a dark horse. He gets consistent enough content to keep him memorable and is also positioned in the middle of “honor and integrity” and “secrets and deception.” He isn’t shown being deceitful at all, but he did contemplate it with Star before deciding against it.

Objectively, there is no evidence of Shauhin’s shadiness, but we are given some hints that he could be. Thomas said that Shauhin was also worried about how close Joe and Eva were, yet we never hear Shauhin say this. It gets relegated to Thomas while Shauhin is shielded. This suggests to me that they are curating Shauhin’s content. For what specific reason, I do not know.

But Shauhin gets consistent, unnecessary content that stands out and gets threatening SPV from Kyle and Kamilla. The threatening SPV is important because this is what winners usually get to build them up as the victor. I’m sensing a rivalry between Shauhin and Kyle/Kamilla. Shauhin was the face of Kyle/Kamilla’s deception in Episode 4. I think it’s because this might become a bigger deal and they wanted to set it up in the fourth episode. The only people who keep throwing sus on Shauhin are Kyle and Kamilla. What does this mean for the overall story? Time will tell.
