Episode 7 – The Edit Bay (Shortened Edition)

Edit Bay this season is going to be a much shorter analysis due to spoilers. However, I will still assign ratings to each player, so readers can track the chart throughout the season. And I will highlight a few potential story arcs and important alliances. But there will be no discussion of potential winner edits.

OVERVIEW

The first few minutes of Episode 7 were really promising. We got to see some of the fallout of last week’s tribal council, with Yam Yam’s reaction to receiving votes and his outlining his strategy is “to charm people.”

Then we had an interesting look into the merged tribe dynamics, with the brewing war between Ratu and Soka, plus fractures within the former Soka tribe. Matt discovered that he had a fake idol and had been set up by Danny, putting the firefighter in the crosshairs. Meanwhile, Danny led the charge to vote out Lauren, naming her extra vote as a potential threat.

Meanwhile, Carson spoke on behalf of the Tika trio, describing them as the kingmakers in this potential Ratu versus Soka war.

It finally felt like the edit was giving us something to sink our teeth into, and then, it all went up in flames. The splitting of the tribe and team immunity meant that the Ratu v Soka and Matt v Danny battles were put on the back burner, and instead, the episode focused on hunting for keys and Heidi’s decision with the Control A Vote advantage.

Sure, there was still some emotional storytelling here, particularly focused on Frannie and Matt’s relationship. But the more intriguing elements set up earlier in the episode fell by the wayside. And so, again, we were left not knowing a great deal about the majority of these players or their intentions going forward.

Just look at all the UTR and MOR ratings in this week’s Edgic chart. Outside of Matt and Yam Yam, nobody was given complexity or a better understanding of their character or part in the story. It felt like a stalling episode, where things will pick back up where they left off in the next episode. But, with Matt now gone, we’ve already lost out on one of those potential stories — his revenge on Danny.

Hopefully, this coming episode will deliver on the promise Episode 7 gave us in those first ten minutes.

ALLIANCES & CONNECTIONS

Carolyn, Carson, & Yam Yam (Alliance) — The only alliance with any real emphasis, we saw in this episode Carson mention them as being in the middle of the Soka versus Ratu war. And we saw Carolyn’s emotional connection to Yam Yam through her reactions at the reward and during Tribal Council.

Carson & Kane (Pair?) — Not much to add to the nerd alliance this week; other than that Carson seems far more committed to the Tika trio than he does to Kane.

Danny & Brandon (Pair) — We still haven’t seen a follow-up on this pairing from the Episode 5 journey. With the tribe being sent to different camps in this episode, it meant missing out on potential relationships such as this. But I still suspect seeing this come up again just based on foreshadowing.
