Survivor: 50 For 50 – Sabiyah Broderick

Who should be invited back for Survivor’s milestone season?

CBS

Welcome to Inside Survivor’s 50 For 50, a semi-regular feature highlighting 50 former castaways who we think should be considered for a spot on Survivor 50. In a snake draft, the Inside Survivor team selected ten players each, with the only rule being they couldn’t have played more than twice.

PROFILE

Name: Sabiyah Broderick
Age: 28
Season: Survivor 45, 2023
Finish: 16th place

HIGHLIGHTS

Regardless of anyone’s thoughts about the New Era, Survivor 45 showed how good it can get, especially when there’s such a fun yet dysfunctional tribe like Lulu in its midst. Out of six players, half wanted to quit, and a couple even did at some point. Out of six, only three will most likely get a chance to come back for a second shot, and here is the case as to why they should. One of them is Sabiyah Broderick.

Sabiyah began her short stay in the game in the chaotic, engaging, and disastrous Lulu tribe, which, before the tribe swap, was never able to win any challenges but a single reward. Due to its continuous losses, the Lulu players were forced to go to the tribal council three consecutive times, and in the first two, Sabiyah was in complete control of the tribe dynamics. After finding the beware advantage, Sabiyah seemed to have had it all in the game.

However, by the third episode, things started going downhill for Sabiyah. Firstly, to have an immunity idol instead of her beware advantage, she had to risk her vote. Secondly, she made the costly mistake of telling Emily Flippen about potentially targeting Kaleb Gebrewold earlier than expected due to his superb social game. Emily later told Kaleb about this plan, which forced him to turn against Sabiyah.

Lastly, Sabiyah couldn’t acquire her idol before the tribal council as her tribe didn’t have fire, and the idol was contained within a candle. Though she made a bold move by melting her candle in plain sight during tribal, Sabiyah’s betrayal was too much for Kaleb, and she was blindsided in a 2-1 vote.

WHY SHE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED

In just a few episodes, Sabiyah demonstrated how she could have been one of the most lethal players in Survivor 45. She formed strong social bonds with basically everyone in her tribe, particularly Sean Edwards and Kaleb, and even went a step further when she tried mending fences with Emily. It is fair to say that had Lulu not lost as much, Sabiyah’s multiple alliances could have propelled her further in the game instead of continuously placing her on the chopping block.

Sabiyah also showed her savviness by finding advantages, making strategic moves, and being willing to do what was needed by targeting Kaleb early, as opposed to when she had to down the line. Her ability to improvise and adapt to her surroundings should be noted, too, as acquiring an idol in such a public fashion is rarely successful. With a few tweaks to her game, Sabiyah is potentially one of the most promising returning players should she decide to play again, even against other cunning players like her.

It is fair to say Season 45 wasn’t Sabiyah’s season, especially as the Survivor gods never offered her a hand or to the Lulu tribe. However, with a different set of circumstances on Survivor 50, who knows what damage Sabiyah could do? May the odds be ever in her favour.
