Christine & Gia’s Island Round-Up – Episode 4

Christine and Gia break down Episode 4.

CBS

Each week, Christine Pallon and Gia Worthy will round up the previous week of Survivor 50 as they list their top moments in various important categories. This includes the most essential information, the stand-out castaways, and the key moments from the week.

Here, Christine and Gia break down all the action from the latest episode.

Top 3 Moments

Survivor’s Got Talent

Christine: Cila gave us a fun camp life segment this week, with the men of the tribe putting on a talent show for Kamilla, Cirie, and Dee. Devens juggled, Rizo broke out a Mickey Mouse impression that sounded strangely like it was also a Mario impression, and Charlie and Jonathan’s talent was seemingly putting on a Survivor WWE match. Rizo is declared the winner, and Charlie acts out a fake crashout over the loss that isn’t entirely fake. Charlie is definitely leaning into the Rizo rivalry as a bit of kayfabe to heighten his character and play into his broader narrative of his past with Maria, but there’s clearly some truth to his desire to target the Survivor 49 player. The feud is still one-sided for now, but with a looming double tribal, it’s more and more likely we’ll see this come to a head in the coming episode.

Zac Brown…a lot of Zac Brown

Gia: We knew there would be some celebrity cameos this season, but I never expected these guest appearances to overshadow the actual game so much. This episode began with the immunity challenge, the first sign that something was amiss. Two tribes would win immunity, but only one would win reward… the reward in question being a day with Zac Brown. I wouldn’t have minded this cameo as much in theory if it didn’t take up about a third of the episode… but alas, it did. As a result, it is officially the lowest-ranked episode in Survivor history. Not a great sign for the cameos to come, but I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

Hey, it’s Billie Eilish!

Gia: Imagine finding two immunity idols, only to learn you can’t keep either of them? That is Genevieve’s current predicament: she has now found her second hidden idol and had to give it away. She found Kalo’s Billie Eilish Boomerang idol and decided to gift it to Rizo. This is only made worse by the fact that her island enemy Aubry has an idol in her possession, and two tribes are going to tribal council next episode. While I have faith in Genevieve’s capabilities to get herself out of this tight spot, the odds are not in her favor at the moment.

Tribe Breakdown

Cila

Christine: As neither the tribe that went to tribal nor the tribe that won the reward, we didn’t get too much insight into Cila, other than the looming Charlie vs. Rizo war and Dee’s love of Zac Brown. Rizo also received an idol from Genevieve, meaning that there are now two advantages on this tribe between his idol and Cirie’s extra vote.

Kalo

Gia: Most of Kalo’s screentime this episode was dedicated to the Zac Brown reward, which they won. It’s disappointing to see that this segment took away so much from the game, the actual main reason fans are watching the show. That being said, this tribe has a lot of tension building, and I have a strong feeling that they will be one of the teams going to tribal council next episode. Personally, I’m excited to see them finally battle it out; it’s been a long time coming.

Vatu

Christine: In the messy buildup to tribal council, we saw Mike White come to Angelina’s aid in her time of need, only for Christian to turn the tables on him when Mike tried to turn Christian on Emily by comparing her to Gabby Pascuzzi. Shoutout to the Gabby Pascuzzi supercut montage! Anyway, Christian came up with a plan to pull off a plurality vote by turning on Mike and leaving Ozzy in the dark. All Emily needed to do was not loop Ozzy in on the fact that she was the vote and not Angelina. Easy enough, right? Except Emily immediately tells Ozzy she’s being targeted to his face, to Christian’s horror.

Thankfully, for some reason, Ozzy still votes Angelina, and Mike goes out in a 3-2-1 vote, with Christian, Stephenie, and Emily voting in the plurality. It’s a vote that blindsides half the tribe, and as we can see in the next episode’s preview, Ozzy is going to be none too happy about it. With a double tribal coming up, the odds of Vatu being one of those losing tribes feel very likely given their horrendous challenge performance this week. I like to think it’s Emily bringing the Lulu curse from Survivor 45.

Top 3 Contestants

Christian

Gia: Without a doubt, Christian has become the certified star of 50’s pre-merge. It helps that he has had to attend every tribal council thus far, but I’d like to think he’d probably have as many iconic moments no matter what. In this episode, Christian has to choose between his former David vs. Goliath castaways and his ally, Financial Analyst Emily Flippen. He wavered a bit on whether or not Emily was worth fighting to keep, but ultimately decided that it was better for his game to have her in his corner. He was able to orchestrate a 3-2-1 vote to oust Mike White, leaving Ozzy out of the loop with his sole vote for Angelina. He might have outlasted the White Lotus creator, but can Christian survive the wrath of Ozzy?

Genevieve

Christine: Let me remind you that in any other season, Genevieve would have two idols by now. But I digress… Genevieve found her second Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol of the season and sent it to her original tribe ally, Rizo, in hopes that she could use his trust in her to manipulate him down the line and secure the idol for herself. Genevieve got this second idol by intercepting her nemesis, Aubry, as she searched for it herself, furthering their feud. Genevieve’s played well so far despite losing her number one ally, Kyle, early on and not being able to hold onto either of the idols she’s found. But the fact remains that her number one opp has an idol she doesn’t know about. If Genevieve’s tribe goes to tribal and the vote comes down between her and Aubry, she’s going to be in big trouble unless she can sniff out that Aubry has something up her sleeve.

Ozzy

Gia: Ozzy has never been a player revered for his strategic prowess, but this season has shown him making strides to improve this flaw in his game. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s all coming crashing down next episode after being left out of the Mike White vote. Ozzy wanted to split up the David vs. Goliath trio and was more than happy to vote out Angelina this round to make Mike a more valuable ally to him.

Unbeknownst to him, Christian also decided to split up his own trio, only he chose Mike to go. With the help of Stephenie and Emily, they were able to orchestrate a 3-2-1 vote that left half of their tribe out of the loop, Ozzy included. However, with an idol in his pocket, I think it’s safe to say that the new majority needs to be worried about going to tribal council again. If history has shown us anything, Hell hath no fury like an Ozzy scorned.

Fallen Comrades

Mike

Christine: After a strong showing last week, everything came crashing down for Mike when he attempted a bit of obvious emotional manipulation by bringing up Gabby to Christian in an attempt to save Angelina. It was an overplay on his part, and not subtle at all. When you work with someone on Survivor, you can’t make it obvious that you’re trying to manipulate them, even if we all know that’s a fundamental part of the game. Bringing up Gabby backfired tremendously, leaving Christian feeling like Mike was trying to pull one over on him rather than work with him as a valued ally.

Mike was always going to have a hard time winning this season due to his fame and fortune, but I’m still pretty surprised to see him out so early. Swapping with his original season castmates was, in the end, his undoing. While he had a strong bond with Angelina, his efforts to save her reopened old wounds for Christian and gave him the ammo he needed to take Mike out.

Gia: Mike White may have built a successful franchise out of his Survivor experience, but this time around, it won’t end with him sitting in the final three. While he managed to make it to the end of the game in David vs. Goliath, it was his trust in his fellow DvG alum Christian that proved to be his undoing. Truthfully, I think at some point or another his success post-Survivor was always going to be a mark against him. Still, it’s rare to see a player return solely because of his love for the experience, as opposed to needing the money.

It was refreshing to see, and Mike’s love for Survivor shone through in every second of screentime he had. His time back in Fiji may have been short, but he still proved just as entertaining a player as ever. From the islands of Fiji back to the White Lotus resort, I’m sure he still managed to pick up plenty of material during this shorter stay. Now the question remains… who from 50 will make an appearance on season 4? Probably not Christian.
