Survivor 47

Episode 2 – The Edit Bay

What is the edit telling us after Episode 2?

CBS

Hello all, welcome back to the Edit Bay! This weekly feature takes a dive into the edit of the latest Survivor episode, analyzing the key stories, main characters, and top winner contenders.

For those new to The Edit Bay, it is a condensed version of Edgic, highlighting some of the stand-out story beats from the most recent episode. It also includes my weekly Edgic ratings for each castaway at the end of the article.

OVERVIEW

Hey all, this will be a much shorter edition of The Edit Bay this week, as I had a tooth extracted the other day and have been in too much pain to analyze Survivor properly. Yes, I know, I’m keeping the “British have bad teeth” stereotype alive and well.

To keep things simple, I will give an overview of each tribe and the main stories at each camp.

GATA

Gata is still very much the story of outsider Andy. After his disastrous first few days, Andy tried to work his way back into the tribe dynamics. This mostly involved his fellow tribemates placating him and making him feel like part of the group, even if this was mostly a front.

However, we did see a connection form between Sam and Andy. After Sam found the idol, he told his closest ally, Sierra, that he was willing to use it to save Andy. While Sierra seemed reluctant about the idea, she said she would go along with what Sam wanted.

I think Gata has set up a story of Sam & Sierra on one side, with Anika & Rachel on the other, and Andy falling in the middle. If Gata does to tribal again, I suspect Andy will be safe and the target could land on one Anika or Rachel. Most likely, Anika, given her “toxic clingy boyfriend” comment was slightly villainous.

LAVO

Lavo has pretty much become the Rome versus everyone tribe. This episode didn’t explore any new dynamics, and most of the tribe were barely visible outside of Rome, Teeny, and Kishan. We had Rome telling Teeny about his idol, only for Teeny to tell Kishan and then get busted by Rome.

Even though Teeny said they were good at smoothing things over, Rome said in confessional he no longer trusted Teeny like he thought he did. This sets up a potential conflict moving forward. Given the red tribe’s lack of depth, I can only imagine that if they go to tribal, the vote will most likely revolve around Rome, Teeny, and Kishan. I could see a world where Rome idols out Kishan in order to get closer to Teeny.

TUKU

Tuku was the most fleshed-out tribe in this episode due in part to their attending the tribal council. The trio of Sue-Gabe-Caroline was reestablished, and it seems to have more weight to it than it initially seemed. Even though Caroline was hesitant to trust Gabe, his showing her his idol was enough to convince her the alliance was legitimate.

On the other side, we had TK pulling in Kyle, Tiyana, and Gabe; only he didn’t realize Gabe wanted no part of a bros alliance. Most of the conflict in this tribe stemmed from TK and his perceived arrogance, from his non-stop chatter when Sue was trying to sleep to his reaction to the tribe smiling post-challenge loss.

This allowed Tiyana to step into the spotlight, with the episode’s vote and big decision falling on her shoulders. She reiterated her statement from the premiere about wanting to play with the big dogs but also explained why working with TK was a struggle. It became a battle between head and heart, and Tiyana ultimately went with her heart. Whether this will prove to be the right decision remains to be seen.

OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST

Rachel and the rice – I don’t think this moment reflected negatively on Rachel at all. It was a light-hearted scene that was meant to be funny. It sort of reminded me of Michele walking to the wrong mat in Kaoh Rong.

Gabe and his wounded birds – Gabe referring to Sue and Caroline as his “wounded birds” and how he believes he could sweep a jury sitting next to them felt very ominous foreshadowing. It was sort of Russell Hantz light, and I could see Sue and/or Caroline outdoing Gabe this season.

EARLY CONTENDERS

Top Tier: Sue, Tiyana, Teeny

Second Tier: Rachel, Sam
