Each week Inside Survivor contributor Rob Brodeur will be collecting various Survivor-related statistics and information based off the latest episode of Survivor 43.

Immunity Challenge #1:  “Strung Out”

  • Owen won his third immunity challenge this episode.
    • He’s the first Asian American to win three individual immunity challenges in a season.
  • Variations of this challenge have been previously used in Vanuatu, Heroes vs. Villains, Philippines, Blood vs. Water, Worlds Apart, Millennials vs. Gen X, and Survivor 42.
    • Chris Daugherty and Mike Holloway are the only Sole Survivors to win this challenge (they were won as tribal challenges).
    • JT won this challenge in Heroes vs. Villains, but he didn’t win the season.
  • Nobody that’s won this challenge as an individual challenge has won the game.
    • Carter in Philippines, Ciera in Blood vs. Water, Ken in Millennials vs. Gen X, and Owen in Survivor 43.

Immunity Challenge #2: “Operation Balance Build”

  • This challenge was previously used in One World, Blood vs. Water, and Millennials vs. Gen X.
    • Kim Spradlin is the only Sole Survivor to win this challenge.
  • Both challenges in this episode were used in Blood vs. Water and Millennials vs. Gen X.
    • Ken McNickle won both in Millennials vs. Gen X.
  • Cassidy won the final immunity challenge.
    • Cassidy and Owen both had three individual immunity challenge wins this season.

Confessionals

  • Owen had the most confessionals this episode with 17.
  • Gabler and Jesse had the least amount of confessionals this episode with 10.
  • Jesse had the most confessionals this season with 60.
    • Angelina in David vs. Goliath is the most recent woman to have the most confessionals in a season.
  • Jesse is the first person since Rick Devens in Edge of Extinction to have the most confessionals in a season and not make it to Final Tribal Council.
  • Gabler and Jesse are the only players to have a confessional in every episode this season.
    • Coincidentally, both of them received 0 votes that counted against them this season.

Hidden Immunity Idol

  • All three idols played this season negated exactly one vote.
    • The person who went home during these tribal councils was voted out with four votes.
  • This is the first time since Cambodia that all hidden immunity idols that were played nullified at least one vote.
  • Cody’s idol changed hands the most out of any idol in Survivor history.
    • It went from Cody to Jesse back to Cody back to Jesse, then was played for Owen.

Tribal Council #1

  • Karla was voted out 4-0.
    • The original vote was 4-1 but Jesse negated Karla’s vote against him with an idol.
  • Karla is the first LGBTQ+ woman to be voted out in 5th place.
    • All prior LGBTQ+ 5th placers were men.
      • Bret in Millennials vs. Gen X
      • Donathan in Ghost Island
      • Ricard in Survivor 41
  • Karla has the second highest placement for LGBTQ+ women, with Scout in Vanuatu having the highest placement (3rd).
  • Gabler and Jesse are the only players this season to not receive a vote that counted against them.
    • Gabler is the only player to not receive any votes against him this season.
  • Cassidy is the highest ranking member of Coco.
    • She’s also the highest ranking woman this season.
  • Cody’s vote-out in the previous episode was the 600th vote-out in Survivor.

Fire-making

  • Gabler won and set a record for fire-making with 4 minutes 9 seconds.
  • Gabler is the 15th person to win a fire-making challenge at final 4. The others are as follows:
    • Ian Rosenberger in Palau
    • Danielle DiLorenzo in Panama
    • Becky Lee in Cook Islands
    • Bob Crowley in Gabon
    • Carolyn Rivera in Worlds Apart

  • Jesse lost the fire-making challenge against Gabler in the F4 fire-making twist.
    • He’s the 12th person to be eliminated from the game (outside of a quit, removal or medevac) without a vote taking place at all.
      • Wanda and Jonathan in Palau were the first and second (not chosen during the initial schoolyard pick for tribes), Bobby Jon in Palau was the third, Devon in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers was the fourth, Angela was the fifth in Ghost Island, Kara was the sixth in David vs. Goliath, Rick was seventh in Edge of Extinction, Lauren Beck was the eighth in Island of the Idols Sarah Lacine was the ninth in Winners at War, Heather Aldret was the tenth in Survivor 41, Jonathan was the eleventh in Survivor 42.
        • Jonathan, Heather, Lauren, Rick, Kara, Angela, Devon and Bobby Jon were eliminated due to a fire-making challenge.
    • Ian Rosenberger in Palau, Brandon Hantz in Caramoan, and Jeff Varner in Game Changers were eliminated without a formal vote taking place but were still voted out.
  • Jesse is the 15th player to lose a fire-making challenge at final 4.
  • Jesse is the 16th castaway to be eliminated without being voted out, removed, quitting, or being medically evacuated. The others are as follows:
    • Paschal English in Marquesas – Rock draw.
    • Jonathan Libby & Wanda Shirk in Palau – not chosen for a tribe in episode 1.
    • Bobby Jon Drinkard in Palau – Fire making challenge with only 2 tribe members remaining.
    • Rupert Boneham in Blood vs. Water – swapped places with Laura B. after she was voted out.
    • Katie Collins in Blood vs. Water – Rock Draw.
    • Jessica Lewis in Millennials vs. Gen X– Rock Draw.
    • Cirie Fields in Game Changers – Didn’t receive any votes, but was the only person eligible to be eliminated due to idols and advantages being played.
    • Devon Pinto in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers – Lost the F4 fire-making challenge twist.
    • Angela Perkins in Ghost Island – Lost the F4 firemaking challenge twist.
    • Kara Kay in David vs. Goliath – Lost the F4 fire-making challenge twist.
    • Rick Devens in Edge of Extinction – Lost the F4 fire-making challenge twist.
    • Sarah Lacina in Winners at War – Lost the F4 firemaking challenge twist.
    • Heather Aldret in Survivor 41 – Lost the F4 fire-making challenge twist.
    • Jonathan Young in Survivor 42 – Lost the F4 fire-making challenge twist.
  • In seasons with a final 3, Jesse is the first player to make it through to the final 4 and be eliminated with a perfect voting record.
    • He also correctly voted for the winner of the season.
  • Gabler is the 7th winner to win the fire-making challenge.
    • Bob, Ben, Wendell, Chris, Tony, and Gabler are the only winners to take part in a fire-making challenge at final 4 and win the title of Sole Survivor.
      • Bob is the only winner to be involved in a tie-vote at final 4 to win the fire-making challenge as part of a tiebreaker.
        • Ian is the only man to win a fire-making challenge but not win the game, while no women that have won the fire-making challenge have won the game.
          • Ian is also the only person to win a F4 fire-making challenge and not make it to the final tribal council.
  • Only men have won the final 4 fire-making challenge twist.
    • Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers – Ben won
    • Ghost Island – Wendell won
    • David vs. Goliath – Mike won

    • Karla voted for Jesse when she was eliminated, and Jesse lost the fire-making challenge.
  • In all three seasons of the “new era” someone from the blue tribe has always been at the end.
  • Every blue starting tribe in the last 12 seasons had at least one representative in the finals.

Second Runner-Up (Owen)

  • Owen is the first player in the “new era” to be brought to the final 3 and not win the game.
    • He’s also the first to receive no votes to win.
  • Owen is the first Asian-American man to make it to final tribal council since Tai in Kaoh Rong.
    • Coincidentally, they both started on a yellow tribe, made it to final tribal council with someone from their starting tribe, and received 0 votes to win.
  • Of the two US Survivor players with the last name “Knight”,” one was voted out in the first episode (Zane Knight in Philippines) and one made it to final tribal council (Owen in Survivor 43)
  • Owen is the 28th player to receive 0 votes to win at final tribal council. The others are as follows:

    • She’s also the first woman to receive exactly one vote at final tribal council since Carolyn in Worlds Apart.
  • Cassidy is the first “new era” player to win the final immunity challenge and be runner-up.
    • Romeo and Xander won the final immunity and were both 3rd place finalists.

Winner (Gabler)

  • Gabler is the second oldest winner after Bob.
    • They were both in their 50s when they won and are the only players in their 50s to win.
  • Gabler is the first winner to be the oldest player in his season.
  • Gabler is the 11th winner who didn’t receive any votes against him all season.

  • Another coincidence with Kaoh Rong is that once the jury started, the number of players from the same colored starting tribes was the same.

    • 4 players: Coco (Cassidy, Karla, Ryan, & James) and Chan Loh (Aubry, Joe, Debbie, Neal)
    • 4 players: Baka (Gabler, Owen, Sami, & Jeanine) and Gondol (Michele, Tai, Julia, & Nick)
      • In fact, if Neal & Nick from Kaoh Rong or Jeanine & James from Survivor 43 were swapped, both seasons’ jury phase colors would match exactly.
  • Every season where the first four players voted out were women, a man was the winner.
    • Panama: Aras won and Tina, Melinda, Misty, & Ruth-Marie were the first 4 boots.
    • Fiji: Earl won and Jessica, Erica, Sylvia, & Lilliana were the first 4 boots.

  1. Karla has the second highest placement for LGBTQ+ women, with Scout in Vanuatu having the highest placement (3rd). –> Isn’t Natalie Bolton who placed 4th in Micronesia a member of LGBTQ+?
