Jeff Probst Explains Why the Chicken Reward Returned

Plus, a twist we might see on Survivor 50.

CBS

Survivor host Jeff Probst, producer Jeff Wolfe, and Survivor 46 runner-up Charlie Davis meet on the On Fire Podcast to discuss the fourth episode of Survivor season 47. They talk about the differences between players, an advantage that might appear in Survivor 50, plus the return of the chicken reward to Survivor. To round it up, Probst answers some fan questions.

Most, if not all, past castaways have entered the game with preconceptions of what type of player they want to be. However, as Charlie explained in this week’s episode, no one knows what kind they will truly be until they are on the mats on day 1. Just as Teeny thought she would be a cutthroat player with no remorse, once the game starts and everyone starts bonding, everyone’s reactions and strategies will continue to shift due to the multiple variables of the game itself.

Afterwards, they’re all joking around about the beware advantage, and Probst emphasises that players should beware when coming across it, as it might come with chaotic results, just as it did with Sue. Wolfe then quips there should be a “Super Beware” advantage next. Between laughs, Probst admits it’s a dumb name but that it’s catchy nonetheless and adds this new idea might even turn up in Survivor 50.

Also, the chicken reward comes up, and Probst reminisces how this particular prize is very Survivor-y, primarily due to the moral dilemma it brings to the table: to eat or not to eat the chicken. “That’s the why behind giving the tribe the chickens. It forces at least a conversation and ultimately a decision of what you’re going to do with them.” Probst mentions, too, why the chickens were brought back for the New Era, “We are very committed to the idea of very little food, but one thing we like to do is experiment… and to keep the players off balance.”

Lastly, via fan questions, Probst is asked if players can opt out of voting, and Probst answers they can’t unless it is due to a twist. Otherwise, they must vote. Probst is also asked which iconic phrase he would get rid of if he had to. Though he wouldn’t want to, Probst ultimately chose “Sorry for you, otherwise known as,” as Charlie adds, “the losers.”

  1. This was just ridiculous. No matter how many times Jeff screeches “EGG LAYING CHICKENS,” it doesn’t make it true. Those are the SMALLEST hens. Those eggs DID NOT come from those hens. Best case scenario they get a maximum of three eggs a day. They only have like two weeks left because the show is so short now. So they get AT BEST 3 dozen eggs.
Just eat the chickens. There’s no dilemma. It makes more sense to get the calories straight from the chicken at that point. THAT was the old dilemma, was it worth the short gain or the long haul?
Jeff needs to be put in a geriatric home. Dudes brain has been destroyed by dementia and steroids.
