Each week Inside Survivor contributor Rob Brodeur will be collecting various Survivor related statistics and information based off the latest episode of Survivor: David vs. Goliath.

Tribal Council

  • Natalia was voted out 3-1-1.
    • The first three Vuku members alphabetically (Alec, Davie, & Elizabeth) were the three people that voted Natalia out.
  • Natalia is the second Muslim to play Survivor, after Ibrehem Rahman in Palau.
    • Both were voted out pre-merge.
  • Davie is the first male to receive votes and not be voted out.
    • Both men who have received votes this season are African American.
  • The elimination pattern still follows Ghost Island in which the first two people eliminated were from the orange tribe, the third person was from the purple tribe, and the following two people were from the orange tribe. Also in both Ghost Island and David vs. Goliath, the first five players eliminated were three women and two men.
  • Despite only one original David member being voted out (Jessica), and two original Goliath members being voted out (Jeremy & Natalia), the David tribe is still down in numbers due to Pat and Bi being evacuated and quitting.
  • Four out of five seasons with a tribe expansion resulted in a person of ethnic minority being voted out at the first vote.
    • Peih-Gee Law was voted out in Cambodia
    • CeCe Taylor was voted out in Millennials vs. Gen X
    • James Lim was voted out in Ghost Island
    • Natalia Azoqa was voted out in David vs. Goliath
      • The only tribe expansion season where this didn’t happen was when Caleb Reynolds was voted out in Game Changers.

Quit

  • Bi is the third person to quit due to a medical injury. The others are as follows:
    • Gary Stritesky in Fiji
    • Dana Lambert in Philippines
  • This is the first season since Micronesia to have both a medical evacuation and a quit.
  • Both people eliminated in this episode (Bi & Natalia) have unique first names that haven’t been seen before in Survivor.
    • The first three people eliminated (Pat, Jessica, Jeremy) share a first name with at least one previous contestant.
  • So far, Stacy Kimball and Michelle Yi from Fiji are the only Asian-American women who made it to the merge in a season filmed in Fiji. Everyone else has been eliminated pre-merge. (Gabby is still in the game as of episode 4 of David vs. Goliath)
    • Sylvia Kwan in Fiji
    • Rachel Ako, Mari Takahashi & Lucy Huang in Millennials vs. Gen X
    • Simone Nguyen in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers
    • Bi Nguyen in David vs. Goliath
      • On the contrary to this, every Asian-American man to play in Fiji has made it to the merge (with the exception of James Lim in Ghost Island)
        • Yau-Man Chan & Mookie Lee in Fiji
        • Tai Trang in Game Changers

Tribes/Swap

  • This is the first season where tribe names were changed at a tribe swap.
    • David is now Vuku, and Goliath is now Jabeni.
    • Other seasons have had different names for tribes e.g., “Favorites” for Malakal, however unlike the David and Goliath tribes, Malakal was the official tribe name since the premiere, and “Favorites” was just their nickname.
  • Vuku is Fijian for “ability.”
  • Jabeni is Fijian for “champion.”
  • Tiva is Fijian for “to divert or stray.”
  • Davie and Elizabeth are the only Davids to remain on the orange tribe.
  • Angelina, Mike and Natalie are the only Goliaths to remain on the purple tribe.
  • Tiva is on the beach that was previously used for Yanuya in Ghost Island, Levu in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, Nuku in Game Changers, and Ikabula in Millennials vs. Gen X.
  • This is the first season to have a tribe swap at 17, although only 16 people participated in drawing a buff for the swap.
    • Despite Bi quitting, Jeff Probst said in an Entertainment Weekly interview that they did plan to swap at 17.
  • Carl is the sixth person to be an odd person out and exiled after a tribe swap/dissolve. The others are as follows:
    • Bruce Kanegai in Panama
    • Lisi Linares in Fiji
    • Sugar Kiper in Gabon
    • Julia Sokolowski in Kaoh Rong
    • Debbie Wanner in Game Changers
      • In the first episode of Fiji, Sylvia Kwan was sent to exile after being designated the leader and choosing tribes. This was due to Fiji starting with an odd number of people, leaving Sylvia as the lone person without a tribe.
  • Tiva is the fifth expansion tribe in Survivor history. The others are as follows:
    • Angkor in Cambodia
    • Ikabula in Millennials vs. Gen X
    • Tavua in Game Changers
    • Yanuya in Ghost Island.
      • Every season since Cambodia to start with two tribes has had a tribe expansion.
      • Angkor is the only expansion tribe to not be green.
        • Angkor is also the only tribe to lose the first post-expansion immunity challenge.
        • Game Changers is the only season where a green expansion tribe was added to starting tribes that weren’t orange and purple, as Mana and Nuku were red and blue, respectively.
  • The three pre-merge tribe colors are the same as Cagayan, Millennials vs. Gen X and Ghost Island.

Advantage

  • Carl is the first player in Survivor history to have an idol nullifier.
    • In Australian Survivor 2017, Ziggy had a super idol which allowed her to nullify a hidden immunity idol, but unlike Carl’s nullifier, this was to be played after someone played the hidden immunity idol.

Confessionals

  • Alec had the most confessionals this episode with 5.
  • Alison, Bi, and Lyrsa had the least amount of confessionals this episode with 0 each.
    • Lyrsa has had 0 confessionals in the past two episodes.
  • Everyone on post-swap Vuku had at least two confessionals in this episode.

Reward/Immunity Challenge “Blind Barrow”

  • This is the first time where multiple tribes won immunity during a reward/immunity challenge, but only one tribe won the reward.
    • Previous seasons have had the first place winners get a reward with second place getting a smaller reward.
  • In Ghost Island, the post-swap orange tribe lost the first immunity challenge, while the green and purple tribes won.
    • In both seasons, the green tribe came in first, the purple tribe came in second, and the orange tribe lost.
