Hello all, welcome back to the Edit Bay! This weekly feature takes a dive into the edit of the latest Survivor episode, analyzing the key stories, main characters, and top winner contenders.
For those new to The Edit Bay, it is a condensed version of Edgic, highlighting some of the stand-out story beats from the most recent episode. It also includes my weekly Edgic ratings for each castaway at the end of the article.
OVERVIEW
A brief Edit Bay this week as we prepare to wrap things up for another season. I went through each remaining castaway last week, so there isn’t a huge deal to add here, especially as they all pretty much followed the expected trajectories.
The penultimate episode centered on the conclusion to season-long relationships/feuds, namely Andy and Rachel, Genevieve and Teeny, and Genevieve and Rachel. As I mentioned last week, the Andy and Rachel dynamic hadn’t been given the most attention throughout the season, particularly in the premiere. Their relationship was recapped (completely with montage) at the merge, cementing them as the season’s most important duo.
After Rachel’s early warnings and Andy’s multiple betrays, it felt like the edit was setting up for Rachel to ultimately get her revenge. I wasn’t sure if this would come at Final Tribal Council, with Rachel sitting next to and defeating Andy, or if it would be Rachel blindsiding Andy before then. It turned out to be the latter, with Rachel using her idol and sending Andy packing.
There were a couple of full-circle moments in this episode. We had the moment of Rachel eavesdropping on Andy, Genevieve, Sam, and Teeny at night as they discussed plans on the beach. This was a fun callback to the premiere when Rachel admonished Andy for pulling her aside for a chat in the middle of the night, noting how dangerous a position it could put them in. Rachel proved here just how game-ruining that could be.
We also had the heartfelt scene of the remaining three Gata players on the beach discussing their individual games and where things went wrong for them as an alliance. This led to Andy pitching to Rachel why she should consider voting for him on the jury. Ironically, this only served to show Rachel that Andy was a bigger threat than she’d realized, causing her to switch her vote and bring a conclusion to Andy’s journey edit as the social outcast who turned into a late-game threat.
The second half of the episode focused on Genevieve’s feuds with Teeny and Rachel. The latter was played for fun, showing Rachel and Genevieve appreciating each others’ games but knowing the island wasn’t big enough for the both of them. The edit has been planting the seeds for this showdown since early in the merge when Genevieve first brought up her desire to take Rachel out.
In comparison, the Genevieve and Teeny dynamic came with more emotion and tension. After finding out about Genevieve’s fake idol, Teeny realized they’d been played yet again. This put their entire game into perspective as they recalled all the times Genevieve had lied to and betrayed them. Ultimately, this led to an open one-on-one conversation between the two, where Genevieve owned up to her fake idol.
With Andy and Genevieve out, we’re left with four: Rachel, Sam, Sue, and Teeny.
Rachel has been the Edgic front-runner for weeks, and I’d be genuinely shocked if she doesn’t win. Even though she had a quiet pre-merge, her narrative has had consistency; she is the cautious strategist who loves games and loves winning and has shown patience when making her moves. She laid out her strategy (and story) in the premiere when she said, “Andy is too eager and is moving too fast. I want to move slower.” She bided her time and emerged as the one to beat later in the season.
The other three have flaws that are hard to ignore. Sue had a solid pre-merge, and she had a nice episode last week working with Rachel and revealing her idol when she finally played it at tribal. But her post-merge edit fell off a cliff; she was underedited, pushed to the background, and her hate obsession with Kyle came across far too negatively.
Teeny also had a fairly solid pre-merge and has had some great personal content along the way. But their story has revolved around not dealing well with the emotions of the game, finding it hard to betray others, and too easily falling into people’s traps. There has also been a heavy focus on their fears of the fire-making challenge in the past couple of episodes, which makes me believe Teeny could be the season’s fire-making loser.
Then there is Sam, the only member of the final four that could possibly have a chance of winning. But, again, I find it hard to see. Sam had a strong pre-merge with a lot of the hallmarks of a new era winner’s edit (intro confessional, personal content, CP strategy scenes, and alliances). However, his edit post-merge took a dip, and it lacked consistency. He started off as the “wolf in wolf’s clothing” who wanted to be the “glue guy” of his tribe, yet he failed to keep Gata as one, and his “wolf” game was soon exposed, turning him into a chaotic underdog. There is enough for a solid runner-up edit but not a winner.
