Channel Ten in Australia unveiled its major programmes for 2016 last night in Sydney and the list included a new series of Australian Survivor.
The show originally debuted on Channel Nine in 2002 but was subsequently cancelled after just one season due to poor ratings. The Seven Network then revived the format in 2006 for a celebrity edition which also tanked in the ratings.
Speaking to the AAP (Australian Associated Press), Ten’s chief programming officer Beverley McGarvey said she believed the network could create a version of the show that would appeal to Australians. “We believe there is a way to make the show resonate with Australian audiences,” McGarvey said.
The new series will be set on a remote tropical island overseas. McGarvey stated “…we’ll look at the Pacific Islands, Indonesia. It won’t be an Australian location.”
Channel Ten has had recent success with its other imported reality formats such as The Bachelor, Gogglebox, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, and MasterChef.
Australian Survivor will be produced by Endemol Shine Australia in association with format creator Castaway Television Productions.
