In April, it was reported by The Sun that Survivor UK could be making a return to British television screens as the BBC looked to revive the iconic format. It seems as if there was some truth to those rumors.
According to a new report from Broadcast, the BBC ‘is on the brink’ of a deal to bring Survivor UK back in 2023. It will be produced by Banijay label Remarkable Entertainment and is set to run for 13 episodes, similar to its US counterpart, on BBC1. Filming is scheduled to take place next year in an exotic location.
The reboot is being pushed by Remarkable Entertainment, Initial and Znak TV chief executive Natalka Znak and director of programmes Claire O’Donohoe, who recently secured a deal with fellow British broadcaster ITV for the return of Big Brother UK.
“[Survivor]’s up there alongside Big Brother as a classic social experiment that’s exciting to watch,” a source close to the project told Broadcast. “There will be a whole generation of youngsters who won’t have seen anything like it. Sometimes formats change when they return but this will stay true to its origins with a modern twist.”
Two seasons of Survivor UK aired on the ITV network from 2001 to 2002, but the show never found huge success as it did in the United States. Newsreader Mark Austen hosted the first season, with England cricketer Mark Nicholas taking over for the second season.
