The Postgraduates assemble and agree to go four on Kate at the next tribal council. But Myles pulls Zara aside. He wants to vote for AJ. He figures the Postgraduates are going to turn on each other, and it’s just a question of who blinks first. Myles is determined it is going to be him, right here, at Final 5.
Myles has his fourth idol securely tucked away, although he doesn’t tell Zara, which may further embolden him. But I think we know enough about Chaos Myles to know he would have done it anyway.
Meanwhile, AJ and Kaelan put their heads together in the jungle. AJ senses something is amiss with Myles and concludes that his long-time ally wants to go for Kaelan. AJ vows that if he wins the Immunity necklace, he will give it to Kaelan, while Kaelan restrains himself from responding, “Okay, champ.”
At the Immunity Challenge (trip obstacle block stack), neither AJ nor Kaelan wins. As JLP crowns Zara, she endearingly shouts, “Yay, I won something”. Perhaps the game as well, Zara? Let’s see how you vote tonight.
Back at camp, Myles scurries to Kate to pitch a Kaelan vote. It certainly makes sense, and Kate would be happy to dodge one more tribal council vote out. She also gets pitched a Myles vote by AJ, who is working hard to protect Kaelan. Meanwhile, Kaelan wants to catch Myles in a rat trap.
Myles has a cry on the beach about voting for AJ. He will do it because this is a game, but the social aspect blindsides him momentarily. When the mere thought of writing down Morgan’s name occurred to Kate, she also cried. But she was caught in a more vice-like grip of the social and the strategic parts of the game and knew she could never do it.
When Zara has a strat chat with Kate, she realises she has all the pieces. Each of the other four is voting for someone different. Let’s look at the scoreboard. If everyone does what they tell Zara they will do, Myles is voting for AJ, AJ is voting for Kate, Kate is voting for Kaelan, and Kaelan is voting for Myles. It’ll be a 1-1-1-1 vote, with Zara able to drop the hammer on whomever she likes. It is a powerful moment.
At Tribal Council, the jury is turning lewks. It is a visual feast. Morgan is not present, however. JLP breezes over her absence with a casual “Morgan has decided to leave the game.”
We see each of the players write down their votes in the booth, except for Zara. When Myles plays his idol, the jury is entertained. And they are even more highly entertained when the fourth vote out of the urn is for AJ. They and AJ are gripped instantly by the possibility and meaning of this vote! Who did Zara vote for? We all want to know.
It’s Kate. The jury and many of the television audience are deflated. AJ is astonished. He asks Myles “Who did you vote for?”. Myles tells him straight. “You.”
It is understandable that Zara felt Kate had many of the same assets as she did. Looking forward to the final immunity challenge, if Australian Survivor history tells us anything it will be an endurance challenge, and Kate could give her a run for her money. But moves must be made before then, and that fixation on the final challenge may have cost Zara her place in the final 2.
The Postgraduates are the Final 4, as was foretold. This is my last recap, so I’ll venture an opinion. I don’t think Zara can win now, although there was a world in which she could have made it to final 2. Had she voted for Kaelan in this episode, she would have taken a huge swing in a move all her own (the AJ vote would always belong to Myles), and either voted Kate out at four or teamed up with her to take out one of the men, with AJ furious with Myles for his betrayal. As for Kate beating her at final immunity, she might have banked on Kate’s loyalty for having saved her.
I think Kaelan wins against the field, Myles beats AJ and Zara, and AJ should be hoping he is sitting next to her for the win.
