Bruce Kanegai was a contestant on Survivor: Panama – Exile Island and a member of the dysfunctional but legendary Casaya 6 alliance along with Aras Baskauskas, Cirie Fields, Courtney Marit, Danielle DiLorenzo and Shane Powers. Even though Bruce was a part of the alliance focused on taking Terry Deitz down, he did begin the game on the older men tribe with Terry and the two shared a bond due to their strong work ethic. Bruce was a part of many memorable moments on Survivor: Panama, including building a rock garden (where Courtney rudely practiced her yoga), getting drunk with Bobby “Bobdawg” Mason in the out-house, and eventually having to be medically evacuated due to stomach pains.
Since Panama, Bruce has become a permanent fixture in the Survivory community and does tremendous work for various charities, including appearances at the annual Reality Rally event. Inside Survivor was able to get a hold of Bruce for a brief interview on his thoughts about his former Panama tribe member Terry. Bruce Kanegai talks Terry Deitz and his chances on Survivor: Cambodia.
“What was your overall perception of Terry’s game in Survivor: Panama? Pros and Cons?”
Being in top shape. Terry was a beast during the challenges while competing on Survivor: Panama. You have to remember that he went to Naval Academy on a wrestling scholarship and also played baseball. The mental and physical condition from being one of the top F-14 Fighter pilots gives Terry the edge. We called him Captain America.
“How do you think Terry will change his game on Survivor Cambodia: Second Chance?”
Terry will play the game with the same strategy as last time. He is a leader without rubbing people the wrong way. He likes every thing done first class, from creating a proper shelter and camp, and does it with responsibility. He can analyze the team’s strengths and weaknesses, so whoever is on his tribe will win the majority of challenges.
“Who on the Second Chance cast is Terry’s biggest threat?”
I think Joe Anglim, Andrew Savage and Spencer Bledsoe will be Terry’s biggest threats. He will need to have one or all three on his tribe. They know how to play Survivor hard; they make solid alliances with the females depending on their strengths. There are several strong females competing.
“Who on the Second Chance cast do you see Terry potentially aligning with?”
The older people and the females on his tribe will team with Terry. I think the senior players will respect him more and would like to align with him.
“What is the major thing Terry needs to avoid this time around?”
Terry can only stand laziness or incompetence for a short time since he is ex-military. He will call them out, but only if he does it with finesse.
“What is Terry’s secret weapon to win?”
Terry’s secret weapon is his physical and mental conditioning because of his military background. He gives credit to everyone and uplifts everyone.
“What kind of animal/player will Terry be this time – Fox (cunning strategist), Bear (strong and loyal), Goat (no jury votes), Dead Fish (dragged to the end)?”
I would describe Terry as a powerful Lion…King of the Beast.

He had heart transplant surgery. He is now recovering at home with his family. 🙂
