Each week Inside Survivor contributor Rob Brodeur will be collecting various Survivor related statistics and information based off the latest episode of Survivor: Island of the Idols.

Season/Finale/Reunion

  • This is the first finale in a 20 person season with fewer than six active players in the finale since Caramoan.
    • Every other 20 person season since then had six active players in the finale.
      • Blood vs. Water had four active players going into the finale and three players that were on Redemption Island.
  • Both men in the finale are from New York, while the three women in the finale are all from different states (Florida, California, & Maryland).
  • Jamal and Aaron were the only men to be voted out post-merge.
    • Dean and Tommy made it to final tribal council.
    • Dan was removed.
  • This is the first 20-player, two starting tribe season since Heroes vs. Villains where there was only one player from a tribe remaining in the finale.
    • Colby was the only remaining Hero member in the Heroes vs. Villains finale.
    • Dean is the only remaining Lairo member in the Island of the Idols finale.
      • If you’re counting the fact that Hayden was still eligible to be back in the game if he won the Redemption Island duel, then Blood vs. Water is the most recent time it happened.
        • Ciera was the only remaining Tadhana member in the Blood vs. Water finale.
  • This was the first reunion that was pre-taped and not shown live.
  • This reunion had the most players not in attendance with three.
    • Jack, Elizabeth, and Dan did not attend.
      • Dan was banned due to his removal, and Jack and Elizabeth did not attend for unknown reasons.
    • Previous seasons where the entire cast didn’t attend are as follows:
      • CaramoanBrandon was banned, Brenda was pregnant and couldn’t fly.
        • Also of note, the entire pre-jury was sat in the audience and not on stage.
      • Cambodia – Vytas was banned due to leaving Ponderosa early and posting on social media.
      • Ghost Island – Stephanie Johnson did not attend for personal reasons.
      • David vs. Goliath – Alec was banned for a social media post that was viewed as a spoiler, and Jeremy did not attend for unknown reasons.

Tribal Council #1 (Janet Voted Out)

  • Janet was voted out 4-1.
  • This was the first time this season where Lauren received a vote.
  • Tommy and Janet are the only members of the final five that never won immunity.
  • She’s the second person to have her hidden immunity idol nullified, after Dan Rengering in David vs. Goliath.
    • Both times an idol was nullified, it was used by a man from the orange tribe (Carl, Dean) against a player from the purple tribe (Dan, Janet).
    • Janet is the first woman to have her hidden immunity idol nullified.

Tribal Council #2 (Lauren Eliminated)

  • Lauren was the last person to receive votes this season.
  • Lauren lost the fire-making challenge against Dean in the Final 4 fire-making twist.
    • She’s the eighth person to be eliminated from the game (outside of a quit, removal, or medevac) without a vote taking place at all.
      • Wanda and Jonathan in Palau were the first and second (not chosen during the initial schoolyard pick for tribes), Bobby Jon in Palau was the third, Devon in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers was the fourth, Angela was the fifth in Ghost Island, Kara was the sixth in David vs. Goliath and Rick was seventh in Edge of Extinction.
        • Rick, Kara, Angela, Devon and Bobby Jon were eliminated due to a fire-making challenge.
    • Ian Rosenberger in Palau, Brandon Hantz in Caramoan, and Jeff Varner in Game Changers were eliminated without a formal vote taking place, but were still voted out.
  • Only men have won the Final 4 twist fire-making challenge.
    • Heroes vs. Healers vs. HustlersBen.
    • Ghost Island – Wendell.
    • David vs. Goliath – Mike.
    • Edge of Extinction – Chris.
    • Island of the Idols – Dean.
      • Mike and Dean are the only players to win the F4 fire-making challenge twist since its inception and not win the season.
  • Lauren is the 12th castaway to be eliminated without being voted out, removed, quitting, or being medically evacuated. The others are as follows:
    • Paschal English in Marquesas – Rock Draw.
    • Jonathan Libby & Wanda Shirk in Palau – not chosen for a tribe in episode 1.
    • Bobby Jon Drinkard in Palau – Fire-making challenge with only two tribe members remaining.
    • Rupert Boneham in Blood vs. Water – swapped places with Laura B. after she was voted out.
    • Katie Collins in Blood vs. Water– Rock Draw.
    • Jessica Lewis in Millennials vs. Gen X– Rock Draw.
    • Cirie Fields in Game Changers – Didn’t receive any votes, but was the only person eligible to be eliminated due to idols and advantages being played.
    • Devon Pinto in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers – Lost the F4 fire-making challenge.
    • Angela Perkins in Ghost Island – Lost the F4 fire-making challenge.
    • Kara Kay in David vs. Goliath – Lost the F4 fire-making challenge.
    • Rick Devens in Edge of Extinction – Lost the F4 fire-making challenge.
  • Dean is the 11th person to win a fire-making challenge at Final 4. The others are as follows:
    • Ian Rosenberger in Palau.
    • Danielle DiLorenzo in Panama.
    • Becky Lee in Cook Islands.
    • Bob Crowley in Gabon.
    • Carolyn Rivera in Worlds Apart.
    • Aubry Bracco in Kaoh Rong.
    • Ben Driebergen in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers.
    • Wendell Holland in Ghost Island
    • Mike White in David vs. Goliath
    • Chris Underwood in Edge of Extinction
      • Bob, Ben, Wendell, and Chris are the only winners to take part in a fire-making challenge at Final 4 and win the title of Sole Survivor.
        • Bob is the only winner to be involved in a tie-vote at Final 4 to win the fire-making challenge as part of a tiebreaker.
          • Ian and Dean are the only men to win a fire-making challenge but not win the game, while no women that have won the fire-making challenge have won the game.
            • Ian is also the only person to win a F4 fire-making challenge and not make it to final tribal council.
  • Five people this season have been eliminated without being able to cast a vote.
      • Jason had his vote taken away by Elaine in episode 6.
      • Jamal lost his vote in episode 8.
      • Elizabeth was unable to vote after the tied vote in episode 10.
      • Dan was ejected without a vote taking place.
      • Lauren was eliminated after losing the fire-making challenge.

Final Tribal Council – Tommy (Winner)

  • Tommy won 8-2-0.
    • He’s the first winner to win with an 8-2-0 vote.
  • He’s the only male winner to win Survivor without finding/having an idol, advantage, or winning individual immunity.
  • Both times someone named Chris has won Survivor, someone named Tom/Tommy has won the following season.
    • Chris Daugherty won Vanuatu, Tom Westman won Palau the following season.
    • Chris Underwood won Edge of Extinction, Tommy Sheehan won Island of the Idols.
      • Coincidentally, Danni Boatwright has been on two seasons after a Tom/Tommy has won Survivor.
        • Guatemala followed Palau.
        • Winners at War followed Island of the Idols.
  • Tommy is the youngest Survivor winner by birth date (October 26, 1992).
    • Chris Underwood (winner of Edge of Extinction) was also born in October of 1992.
  • None of the Final 3 shared a starting tribe/swapped tribe pattern.
    • Tommy – Vokai to Vokai.
    • Dean – Lairo to Lairo.
    • Noura – Vokai to Lairo.
  • Missy is the only player to vote for Tommy twice.
    • She voted for him to go home in episode 9.

  • Five men have won Survivor in a row, breaking the previous record of four.
    • The winners of seasons 12-15 were male.

  • In eight seasons filmed in Fiji, seven of them have been won by men, and all of them have been two men and one woman at final tribal council.

  • Michele is the only newbie woman to win Survivor in the 30s seasons.
    • Kaoh Rong is the last season to not feature returning players that had a female winner.
  • Tommy is the first winner since Natalie White in Samoa to not have any idols, advantages, or immunity wins.
  • Despite being the winner of Island of the Idols, Tommy never had a lone visit Island of the Idols and never “learned a lesson” from Rob & Sandra.
  • Tommy is the first person since the F4 fire-making challenge was introduced that was chosen by the immunity winner to go to final tribal council and win the game.
    • He didn’t win immunity and didn’t take part in the fire-making challenge.
  • Every season with a purple vs. orange tribe has had the winner alternate between an orange tribe and purple tribe.

  • Dean is the highest-ranking member of the Lairo tribe.
  • He’s the second person in Survivor to possess and correctly play an idol nullifier.
    • The first was Carl Boudreaux in David vs. Goliath.
  • Dean is the only player this season to have no votes that counted against him.
    • He received five votes in episode 7 but played a hidden immunity idol negating all the votes.
  • Dean is the first player since Tai in Kaoh Rong to make it to final tribal council with an unused hidden immunity idol.
    • Dean is the seventh person to have a hidden immunity idol and make it to final tribal council with the unused idol. The others are as follows:
      • Yul Kwon – Cook Islands.
      • Russell Hantz – Samoa.
      • Coach Wade – South Pacific.

Final Tribal Council – Noura (3rd Place)

  • Noura is the highest-ranking woman this season.
  • She won the most individual immunity challenges this season with three.
  • Noura is the only player in the Final 3 to vote differently than the other two, voting for Dan in the episode that Kellee went home.
  • She’s the fourth woman in a row to make it to final tribal council and not receive any votes to win. The others are as follows:
    • Laurel Johnson – Ghost Island.
    • Angelina Keeley – David vs. Goliath.
    • Julie Rosenberg – Edge of Extinction.
      • Chrissy Hofbeck in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers is the most recent woman to receive votes to win.

Confessionals

  • Tommy had the most confessionals this episode with 17.
    • He also had the most confessionals this season with 52.
  • Janet had the least amount of confessionals this episode with 4
  • Ronnie had the least amount of confessionals this season with 1.
    • The winner had the most confessionals, while the first boot had the least amount of confessionals.
  • Lauren had the highest confessional count of the women this season with 37.
  • The top six confessional players this season are as follows:
    • 1. Tommy – 52
    • 2. Dean – 47
    • 3. Lauren – 37
    • 4. (Tie) Noura, Elaine, & Kellee – 34

Hidden Immunity Idols/Advantage

  • Dean found a hidden immunity idol.
  • Everyone in the Final 5 either found or had an immunity idol played for them, except for Tommy.
    • Dean found one idol and was given one by Kellee.
    • Noura had an idol played on her by Jamal.
    • Lauren won an idol at Island of the Idols.
    • Janet found two hidden immunity idols.
  • This season holds the record for most hidden immunity idols present with 12.
    • It ties the record for most hidden immunity idols found with Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, both had 9 found.
    • As of this season, there’s a total of 119 hidden immunity idols in Survivor.
  • The only two players this season to have an idol given to them/played for them made it to final tribal council.
    • Jamal played an idol for Noura in episode 7.
    • Kellee gave Dean an idol in episode 7.
  • Michele and Tommy are the only winners in the 30s seasons to not play a hidden immunity idol or legacy advantage.

Island of the Idols

  • This was the first time that new buffs were given out this late in the game.
    • This is also the first season to have two different merge buffs.
      • This doesn’t include Palau, where the Koror buff was technically the merge buff, plus the unused green merge buff.
  • Tommy is the only player in the Final 5 to have his first visit to Island of the Idols in this episode.

Immunity/Reward Challenge #1 – “Born to Rung”

  • The challenge name is based on the song “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen.
  • Dean won two challenges in a row.
    • The only two men to win individual immunity this season (Aaron & Dean) won both challenges back-to-back.
  • Aaron, Kellee, and Jamal are the only players this season who didn’t win/take place in a reward.
    • Everyone in the Top 10 either won a reward or they were chosen to participate in the reward.

Immunity Challenge #2 – “You Shook Me”

  • The challenge name is based on the song “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC.
  • This challenge was previously seen in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers.
    • It was won by Chrissy Hofbeck.
      • Both players to win this challenge didn’t win the season.
      • Only women have won this challenge.

Ratings

Episode Title

  • The episode title “Mama, Look at Me Now” was said by Dean when talking about his immunity win, hidden immunity idol, and idol nullifier.

  1. I think the stats here are evidence enough that the forced fire-making challenge benefits men. Production needs to change it back to the old rules, because watching people make fire isn’t compelling TV. The tie-breakers were better TV because it felt like there was so much more on the line. Or, well, they were hilarious like Cook Islands.

    • There were only 8 jurors in Micronesia. She won 5-3. Erik, James and Ozzy voted for Amanda, while Cirie, Natalie, Alexis, Jason and Eliza voted for Parvati.
