Each week Inside Survivor contributor Rob Brodeur will be collecting various Survivor related statistics and information based off the latest episode of Survivor: Edge of Extinction.

Season

  • This is the seventh season to film in Fiji.
    • It’s the sixth season in a row to film in Fiji.
      • This season beats the record for a location most used in consecutive seasons.
        • Millennials vs. Gen X, Game Changers, Heroes vs Healers vs. Hustlers, Ghost Island, David vs. Goliath, and Edge of Extinction were all filmed in the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji.
  • This is the 12th season to feature returning players.
  • Fiji continues to hold the record for the most used location for Survivor seasons.
    • Fiji, Millennials vs. Gen X, Game Changers, Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, Ghost Island, David vs. Goliath, and Edge of Extinction have all been filmed there.
  • Every season that has “8” in the number has filmed on a different continent.
    • Season 8 – All-Stars filmed in Panama which is in North America.
    • Season 18 – Tocantins filmed in Brazil which is in South America.
    • Season 28 – Cagayan filmed in the Philippines which is in Asia.
    • Season 38 – Edge of Extinction filmed in Fiji which is in Oceania.

Tribal Council

  • Reem was voted out 4-3-1-1.
    • She’s the second person to be voted out first by only four votes on a two-tribe season. The other is Francesca Hogi in Redemption Island.
      • Both weren’t immediately eliminated from the game, but sent to an island with the hopes of returning to the game.
  • Reem is the first person ever to be sent to the Edge of Extinction.
  • The last time there was a blue starting tribe (Levu in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers) the oldest woman on the season (Katrina Radke) was voted out first.
  • Reem is the 24th woman to be the first person voted out of a season.
    • Darnell Hamilton in Kaoh Rong was the most recent male to be the first person voted out of a season.
      • Pat Cusack was the first person eliminated from David vs. Goliath, but he was medically evacuated, making Jessica Peet the first person officially voted out of the season.
  • Both times David went to the first tribal council in his seasons, he voted correctly.
    • In Millennials vs. Gen X, he voted out Rachel Ako, and in Edge of Extinction, he voted out Reem.
  • Both times Kelley was on a blue starting tribe, she got one vote against her at her first tribal council she attended.
    • In San Juan Del Sur, Drew Christy voted for her, and in Edge of Extinction, Reem voted for her.
  • Every woman on Manu received at least one vote at this tribal council.
    • Every male member of Manu voted for Reem, except for Wardog.
  • Lauren and Wendy are the only players to vote for each other at this tribal council.

Cast

  • The average age of this cast is 31.7.
  • Reem is the oldest woman this season at 46.
    • She’s the sixth player to be the oldest player in a season, but only be in her 40s. The others are as follows:
      • Sekou Bunch in Cook Islands
      • Steve “Chicken” Morris in China
      • Trish Hegarty in Cagayan
      • Katrina Radke in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers
      • Angela Perkins in Ghost Island
  • Ron is the oldest man this season at 46.
  • Keith is the youngest male castaway this season, and also the youngest castaway, at 19.
  • Lauren is the youngest female this season at 21.
  • Eric Hafemann is the first Eric (with a c) to play Survivor. Previously only people named Erik (with a k) have played.

  • This is the first returning player season where there are exactly four returning players. Other returning player seasons include:

    • Redemption Island – 2 returning players.
    • South Pacific – 2 returning players.

  • This cast contains four returning players that represent every season from 29-34.

        • The record is held by All-Stars (Season 8) which contained players from seasons 1-7.
  • The returning players have only played in three total locations between the four of them, these locations include Nicaragua, Cambodia, and Fiji.
    • Kelley and Joe are the only ones to play in three different locations each time.
      • They’re the 15th and 16th three-time players to play in different locations each time they played.

          • Stephenie is the only person on this list to have a unique location that nobody else on the list has, which is Guatemala.
  • Every returning player this season has won individual immunity at least once in a previous season.
    • Aubry won individual immunity once in Game Changers.
    • David won individual immunity twice in Millennials vs. Gen X.
    • Kelley won individual immunity twice in Cambodia.
    • Joe won individual immunity twice in Worlds Apart and four times in Cambodia.
  • All four returning players this season live in the western part of the United States.
    • Kelley is from Washington.
    • Aubry and David are from California.
    • Joe is from Utah.
  • Aubry, Joe, and Kelley are three-time players that have each played on three seasons with different cast makeups. One with a completely new cast, one with a full returning player cast, and one with a combination of new players and returning players. Aubry Bracco

  • Aubry finished second place in Kaoh Rong and fifth place in Game Changers (3.5 avg).
  • She’s the only returning player this season to make it to final tribal council.
  • Aubry’s first season, Kaoh Rong, had yellow, blue, and red starting tribes.
    • On Kaoh Rong, Aubry started on Chan Loh, a blue tribe.
    • On Game Changers, Aubry started on Mana, a red tribe.
    • On Edge of Extinction, Aubry started on Kama, a yellow tribe.
  • Aubry is currently the only returning player from Game Changers. She shares the distinction of being the sole representative from a season with the following players:
    • Shii Ann Huang – Thailand
    • Stephenie LaGrossa – Guatemala
    • Yau-Man Chan – Fiji
    • Brenda Lowe – Nicaragua

David Wright

  • David finished fourth place in Millennials vs. Gen X (4.0 avg).
  • He’s the only returning player this season to only play in one previous season.
    • David is the first returning player from Millennials vs. Gen X to not be on Game Changers.
  • David is the only player this season who’s original season didn’t have a blue starting tribe.
  • David is the first Gen X player to return for another season, as Michaela and Zeke, who returned on Game Changers, were Millennials.

Joe Anglim

  • Joe finished 10th place in Worlds Apart and eighth place in Cambodia (9.0 avg).
  • He’s the only returning player this season to not make it to day 38 on any of his previous seasons.
  • Joe didn’t cast a single correct vote in Cambodia (other than for Jeremy to win at final tribal council) thus, he never voted anyone out that season.

Kelley Wentworth

  • Kelley finished 14th place in San Juan Del Sur and fourth place in Cambodia (9.0 avg).
    • Joe and Kelley have the same placement average (9.0).
      • Coincidentally they both played together in Cambodia.
  • She’s the only returning player this season to be voted out pre-merge on a previous season.
  • Kelley has started on a blue tribe in 2 out of 3 of her seasons.
  • Both times she was voted out she was on an orange tribe.
  • Joe and Kelley competed as a team on Candy Crush and won.

Tribes

  • This is the fifth two-tribe season to have a yellow tribe vs. a blue tribe. The others are as follows:
    • MarquesasMaraamu (yellow) vs. Rotu (blue).
    • The Amazon – Jaburu (yellow) vs. Tambaqui (blue).
    • Guatemala – Nakum (yellow) vs. Yaxha (blue).
    • Nicaragua – La Flor (yellow) vs. Espada (blue).
      • Every one of these seasons had the winner start on the yellow tribe.
  • Manu
    • Manu is Fijian for “bird.”
    • The Manu tribe has an average age of 31.3.
    • It’s the 23rd blue tribe.
      • It’s the 19th blue starting tribe.
    • The Manu tribe is on the beach that was previously used for Goliath in David vs. Goliath, Naviti in Ghost Island, Soko in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, Mana in Game Changers, and Takali in Millennials vs. Gen X
  • Kama
    • Kama is Fijian for “fire.”
    • The Kama tribe has an average age of 32.1.
    • Kama is the 22nd yellow tribe.
      • It’s the 18th yellow starting tribe.
        • Yellow and blue are the most common tribe colors in Survivor.
    • The Kama tribe is on the beach that was previously used for David in David vs. Goliath, Malolo in Ghost Island, Yawa in Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, Tavua in Game Changers, and Vanua in Millennials vs. Gen X.
  • If you combine the tribe name meanings, “fire” and “bird” you get “firebird” which is also commonly referred to as a phoenix. Phoenixes are mythological birds that are known for being reborn after they die, which follows the theme of the season in which eliminated players have a chance to return to the game after being voted out.

Confessionals

  • Chris and Julia had the least amount of confessionals this episode with 0 each.
  • Keith had the most confessionals this episode with 5.
  • Aubry and David had 1 confessional this episode, while Joe and Kelley had 2.

Hidden Immunity Idol/Advantage

  • Ron Clark found the secret advantage on the boat during the marooning.
    • He’s the first person to get the “Advantage Menu” which consisted of three options to choose from, including Steal A Tribe Reward, Extra Vote, and Individual Immunity.

Immunity Challenge – “Social Network”

  • Joe’s tribe has always won the first immunity challenge he’s participated in.
    • Joe has also won the first individual immunity challenge in both of his previous seasons.
  • David’s tribe has always lost the first immunity challenge he’s participated in.
  • 3 out of 5 two- tribe season with a blue and yellow starting tribe had the yellow tribe win the first tribal immunity challenge with Marquesas & Guatemala being the only exceptions.

      • Rotu won the first challenge
    • The Amazon – Jaburu (yellow) vs. Tambaqui (blue)

Ratings

  • The season premiere received 7.75 million viewers and 1.6/7 in the Adults 18-49 Rating/Share. This is just slightly lower than last season’s David vs. Goliath premiere (7.83m / 1.7/7). And is lower than last winter’s Ghost Island premiere (8.19m / 1.7/7).

Episode Title

  • The episode title “It Smells Like Success” was said by Joe when he was starting the fire for Kama.
