Australian Survivor 2019 Power Rankings (Round 2)

Former castaways Fenella McGowan and Tess O’Halloran face off!

While the battle between Champions and Contenders is playing out on the islands of Fiji, here on Inside Survivor, an even bigger showdown is taking place. That’s right, Aussie Power Rankings are back, as Fenella McGowan, Tess O’Halloran and Martin Holmes compete for the Inside Survivor Power Rankings crown!

In Round 1, Tess picked up right where she left off last season, that is, at the top, scoring a total of 57 points. Martin is currently in second with 46, while newcomer Fenella is bringing up the rear with 43. It’s still early days and all to play for!

RULES

We use the Gordon Holmes format of Power Rankings. Each week the three power rankers create separate rankings based on least likely to most likely to be eliminated. The ranking of the player who is voted out of the next episode will determine the number of points the rankers will earn. For example, if the person you ranked in 1st place is eliminated in the next episode, you will recieve 1 point. If the person you ranked in 20th place is eliminated, you will receive 20 points. At the end of the season, the person with the most points will be named the Australian Survivor Power Rankings Champion.

As Australian Survivor airs multiple episodes per week, the rankings will count for each episode aired that particular week.

Pia
Pia stays in this top dog position. She’s staying in this position till she wins tbh. Anywayssss, she’s out there trusting her intuition, whispering in tribals, finding her feet in an alliance and rolling her eyes when someone harps on about ‘tribe strength, BLAH BLAH.’ Can someone please put another dollar in the jukebox? BECAUSE I'M SO TIRED OF HEARING THAT BROKEN RECORD.
1
John
Picked to divvy out the gifts - no repercussions. Picked to share hot chocolate with the Chumps - no repercussions. John doesn’t seem to have any actual control in the game, but he doesn’t seem to want it either.
1
Matt
I don't have a clue what is going on at the Contenders beach, other than the fact they keep winning challenges, and Matt plays a big role in that. Should this tribe lose, I don't see anybody super-kicking Matty off the top rope just yet.
2
Baden
Baden came, Baden ran, Baden scored, then Baden jumped with giddy glee. You can’t tell me you’re not starting to have feels for this lil guy. Considering we have a fake idol on his side of the island, and he’s now proven himself to have speed and agility, I think we’ll live to see this lanky hero for another three episodes.
2
Janine
I actually think the dud idol plan worked out better for Janine than David. Knowledge is more powerful than an idol in this game, and she knows where the pieces are, while letting David be the one to get his hands dirty. She has knowledge she could use against either David or Shaun in a swap, and that pretty ornament is not powerless - she could protect someone else, use it as an excellent fake, or take it with her if she moves.
2
John
I think John's mullet has a magnetic attraction. He seems to be adored by both the Contenders and the Champions, so much so that he got to sip hot choc and flirt with his childhood crush Pia.
3
Luke
I almost put Luke in second position, but I’m already losing this thing, so need to be semi somewhat realistic. However, he will never leave my top three. Haha! His idol dance made me giddy with glee, the smoking of the idol clue made me proper LAWL, and his persuasion within his alliance is obvi powerful. (Janine's speech at tribal was good, but I think we need to play props to the farmer who sewed the seeds, no?!) Side note: Add farmer to your ever-growing list of Survivor badges please Luke. If anything goes tits up for your alliance, I see David being more of a target than you. Keep tootin those toones you snake charmer, you.
3
Pia
I absolutely love Pia. She is so aware of everyone around her, and I literally snapped my fingers when she told Steven how it is with his tribe strength malarkey. YESSSSSS thank you. Winning a wrestling match is not everything, and mass can be a liability too.
3
Luke
Luke is creepin' up the rankings. He helped flip Abbey and Ross to his side and gained the majority. He has an idol in his pocket. And despite being the only returning player, nobody seems to be targeting him right now.
4
Abbey
Hooley Dooley Girl, I felt for you last week. HILARIOUS that out of the two people that flipped on their alliance, the woman was targeted first. Why was I not surprised. God forbid she wanted to make a move that would improve her personal game rather than stick with a sinking ship alliance... I mean the athletes alliance. What is this, Survivor?! She saw the icebergs, changed her course, and skated right past Steven's slippery game. If anyone's getting targeted out of her alliance this week it's not her. *she writes hoping that she won’t eat her own words*
4
Abbey
The mess with Steven was probably great for Abbey’s current position in the game - it drove her deep in with the non-sporty (but still x100 sportier than normal people) alliance, and tugged on the dad-strings in ET and Simon. Her challenge now will be to stage a strong recovery and make sure that if she gets to the end, she’s seen as having had agency. I hope she owns her game and doesn’t get too bogged down in sporting analogies - they don’t hold up so well in Survivor, see Lee 2016.
4
Pia
I wish I had Pia's gut instincts. Her perception is spot on. I was worried about her last week, but now she's in the numbers and has a social awareness that could take her far.
5
Matt
Ok. I don’t think Matt is in trouble. I know pretty much nothing about him (or the Contenders tbh), so I'm just going with a gut feeling here. Instead of talk about his game (which I know nothing about as of yet), I’m curious to know if he’ll receive a gajillion DM’s about his hair dye. That's all I have to say about Matt at this point in time.
5
Luke
Luke is absolutely killing it! David is a great big messy meat shield and is only making Luke seem more diplomatic and considerate by comparison. I’m a little nervous that the Tendies are seeing him as a bigger threat than the Chumps have (otherwise why does Matt keep making those scary faces at him?), which could be dangerous in a swap situation… luckily there are no conditions on Luke’s idol!
5
Andy
Andy wants to be this huge evil villain mastermind type character. Instead, he's become the clutch challenge king (Andy Amazing?). He hasn't had a chance to flex his strategic muscles because he keeps winning his tribe challenges.
6
Ross
ROSS. <3 YES. My fav! The labelled wild card. Do not let anyone wipe you out!! You’re the player I want to win (at the moment), but again, the snoring holds me back from putting you any higher. He just makes me wanna crack open a tinnie and belt out some karaoke ballads. I.e. HES MY TYPE OF HUMAN.
6
Shaun
Remember that storyline in Harry Potter (#spoilers for the Half-blood Prince if you’re living under a rock and like 18 years behind) where Harry pretends to spike Ron’s juice with lucky potion, and Ron then plays a killer Quidditch match thinking that he has a lucky potion in him??? I’m sort of hoping the dud idol will work the same way for Shaun and give him the confidence to play a bigger, more exciting game…
6
Daisy
As the only woman with consistent air-time on the Contenders tribe, that either means she's going deep or she's next on the chopping block. I'm banking on the former. We know she's aligned with Shaun, and that could be a deadly duo. I wonder if she'll sniff out the fake idol.
7
Daisy
Daisy is in such an intriguing position. She’s clearly one of the strongest, if not the strongest girl on her tribe, and right now, that's a powerful place to be. However, she’s already being noticed as having a strong connection with Shaun, which is precarious. Shaun has an idol but it's fake, so if votes are split between the two she’s potentially in the clear.
7
Sam
See the Benji Wilson 2018 rule.
7
Shaun
Shaun got duped by David last week, but honestly, there wasn't much he could have done about it. The question now is, will he realise he was given a janky idol? Regardless, he's strong and is one of only a few Contenders we've heard talk game... or talk at all.
8
Shaun
Shaun has a fake idol. Shaun's a footballer. Shaun is married to Megan Gale. Shaun is in an alliance with Daisy annnnnd thus my knowledge on Shaun comes to an end. We’re either going to see a wholeeee lot more of this guy or he’s going home on a fake idol. Damn son, that's a 50/50 position I’m thankful not to be in.
8
Hannah
See the Benji Wilson 2018 rule.
8
Ross
The banana bandit has slipped his way into the majority alliance. Ross doesn't seem like the biggest strategist on the cast, but I think his social game is underestimated. Everyone seems to vibe with him - from what we saw, Ross didn't take any of the heat that Abbey received for the vote flip.
9
Janine
OK wait. Why did Janine give David the idol paper? Holding on to the Contenders' real idol whilst letting David have the papers and then subsequently get his paws on the Champions' idol interests me. Did I miss something? I don’t see that enhancing Janine's game, but it has exposed David's game (& inflated his ego), which Janine has noted. Now that intrigues me. Nevertheless, she’s now playing the game with a David shield, and a shield was the boost her game needed.
9
Simon
Simon and ET should probably be on the bottom of my rankings, but they’ve both shown a willingness to go with the flow and vote with the majority, even when they aren’t a part of the plan. This strategy of playing possum and putting up literally zero fight to save your numbers actually makes them really unattractive targets. It’s no fun shooting ducks in a barrel, at least not for guys like Luke and David, so I think this might actually work in their favour on this tribe.
9
David
Luke may be the King of the Jungle, but David is the Golden God! His tricky idol stunt was all kinds of entertaining, but I worry about his ever-increasing ego.
10
Andy
I need to get this off my chest. I hate the golf hat. It's annoying. He wasn’t being spontaneous at the start because he had the hat? Glll. If I was playing and he asked me if I thought anyone was a superfan I would instantly have thought: YOU. But he’s got great aim; the Contenders are in a winning streak and clearly not in the headspace to be that sceptical. So… I’m waiting for some losses before we see what Andy is really made of.
10
ET
Like Simon, ET voted against his Sporty alliance in the last two tribals. I don’t think folding to a majority that you aren’t included in is great play, but in this tribe, it might actually make them look defenceless enough to keep around. Plus, he seems like a really nice guy, and it looks like he’s catching some fish now.
10
Sarah
A traumatic flashback for Sarah at the Tower of Terror challenge last week, and yet nobody held any ill will towards her for causing the Contenders to lose. The support she received tells me that she's probably in a decent position in the tribe.
11
Harry
Harry, I’m still trying to recover from you chewing on that stick. But I'm also trying to be strategic here because I hate losing. So I don’t think you’re going home this week. I don’t think you’re going to get any votes coming your way but GODDAMMIT IF YOU GO TO TRIBAL AGAIN AND BRING OUT THAT STICK I WILL RAGE.
11
Andy
Andy seems to know what’s what, and he put himself in the middle of his tribe, so I’ll put him in the middle of my rankings… Also, what an arm.
11
Abbey
I think Abbey's in a pretty safe position right now, however, should the underdogs pull off any sort of turnaround, I could see her being targeted because she flipped (even though Ross did too).
12
Sarah
Sarah has female strength which is what the Contenders team is lacking. The only way I see her going home this week is if she really cocks something up.
12
Harry
I’m not sure where Harry’s relationships are, but he seems to be middling along happily enough, and no sign of the mob chew-stick again.
12
Janine
Again, I really want to rank Janine higher. She's playing a decent game and is currently in the numbers. However, her name keeps coming up. I also worry that with David knowing she has the Contenders idol, that he might get fancy and try taking her and that idol out of the game.
13
Sam
Sam's in the middle because I know literally nothing about her. I’m neutral, as is her edit.
13
Daisy
This girl is so wholesome and cheerful, it’s hard to imagine her being targeted except for one little problem - she’s landed herself in a platonic power couple, and it is almost always the woman who takes the hit for this in the early game (hey Aimee).
13
Sam
What we know about Sam so far: she's blonde and on the Contenders tribe. How am I supposed to rank that?
14
Hannah
OK, Mul Man. You’re loved by your tribe, but I don’t see your cogs ticking in terms of moves should things go tits up. If your gameplay is to be everyone's friend: kewl bananas. But has that ever really worked? I should ask Andy tbh. Haha!
14
David
I was verrrry nervous to have ranked David so high last week when he started morphing into power-hungry demon Henry - whoops did I say Henry? Seriously though, did Henry and Rohan have a secret lovechild? The dud idol swap was so fun, but I think the payoff, for better or worse, is coming later down the track, since neither of these guys is likely to need their idol before a swap. Still, major drop in the rankings on account of his basically running around the beach waving his arms around and screaming “I’m a threat, a really big sorta bossy threat, and also the lovechild of Rohan and Henry”… PS David, that idol didn’t do Henry much good in his pocket.
14
Hannah
What we know about Hannah so far: she's blonde and on the Contenders tribe. How am I supposed to rank that?
15
Casey
OK. I don’t know a lot about Casey. So I’ve gotta go with what I do know. She owned a van…. Nup, doesn’t really help me tbh.
15
Matt
Matty has been a surprisingly sweet team player, and he’s a huge unit which should protect him through the early game… but I’ve dropped him through the ranks because he was called out by Andy as being at the top of the tribe, yet he didn’t seem to have any sway on the Laura vote, and he doesn’t seem as insulated as the other supposed tops. He’s also been super vocal in the challenges, which could be risky in an idol-heavy swap with the Chumps. He might be the only name they know to write down.
15
Casey
There's no real reason for Casey to be ranked this low other than that early scene of her taking charge during the shelter building. Also, she sits out of challenges a lot.
16
David
Oooww David, I hate seeing you so low! I really questioned what exactly was going through your head when you chose to take a leather jacket to the island, but goddammit boy, it does get bloody cold out there, so I'm deeming you a genius. You're playing the game, you’re having fun, you’re throwing grenades into the mix, but my only fear is that your game may actually catch some overspray and subsequently blow up in your face. If all else fails, at least you know you've got a cracking arts and crafts side career out here in the real should you get the boot.
16
Ross
It’s a well-documented fact that standing in the middle of the road can get you run over. Ross may have been somewhat protected by Luke’s love of a good wild card, but Simon and ET are slippery targets on account of their seeming refusal to actually defend themselves, and looking toward a swap-up, the fun 4 might want to take out some of the uncertainty. And, the snoring.
16
Baden
After a poor start, Baden had a bit of a comeback in last week's challenges. His tribemates even nicknamed him The Flash. The start of a superhero journey? Or just a flash in the pan? I still think he'll be perceived as the weakest should the Contenders lose a challenge.
17
ET
OK. ET was angry that David basically told him how to vote. He was going to revolt, and yet, he didn’t. No fish. No confessionals. No airtime. I’ve no idea.
17
Casey
Getting a little less protection from the Benji Wilson rule because of all the challenge sit-outs and that shelter-building scene. I also wonder why she needed the ‘don’t want to go’ alliance other than because her name was thrown around more than we saw.
17
Harry
Again, a lot of these Contenders rankings are based on things we saw back in episodes one or two. Harry the maniacal toothpick chewer came on strong at the Laura vote, so should the Contenders go back to Tribal, perhaps he will be fresh in people's minds.
18
Hannah
My beef with Hannah is that I have none. Because I don’t know who she is, what she is, when she is, and where she is. Oh, wait. I do hate it when people lie about their jobs. Why even bother? You’re a cop? Great! That makes me want to work with you???? And then I’d have a better understanding of your fitness?? Maybe no airtime is a good thing for me right now. I’ve gotta work through some stuff here.
18
Baden
Baden has had a pretty satisfying character arc already, coming out as a challenge BEAST (well, close enough) after his early struggles. I’m just not sure the game is there to back it up, which is why we like our nerd archetypes to be superfans.
18
ET
Steven tanked the Sporty Seven's chances of a comeback, and now ET finds himself on the bottom, simply following orders. If the Champions continue to lose, ET is prime for the picking.
19
Simon
OOof, this is hard because tbh, I know nothing about where Simon is at. I don’t even know who he talks to. If it wasn’t for my husband, I wouldn’t know why he’s a Champion. BUT, I don’t see David or Janine going home just yet, and I'm obviously a sucker for the ads. Thus, here we are!
19
Sarah
The tribe seems to love Sarah, and what she has been through is horrifying - she is a tough lady. The trouble for Sarah is that a guy like Andy surely knows that her archetype is difficult to dislodge later on, and on top of that, Australian juries have so far been liable to vote with their hearts (with the exception of my friends, the cut-throats of 2017). If you don’t want to sit next to Sarah at the end, now might be the time to take care of her.
19
Simon
Alongside ET, Simon is the last remnant of the Sporty Seven and is therefore in a terrible position. We've also barely heard him speak. If he starts the next episode with a confessional, then I'd say his time is up.
